SUMMARY: Provide medication related psychiatric services for patients in mental health and substance disorder residential and outpatient treatment programs.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
- Provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management to patients and make timely notations in patient electronic medical record.
- Provide ongoing risk assessment to ensure patient health and safety.
- Examine and approve, medically, all admissions to the appropriate treatment program.
- Review and approve, at least annually, the Comprehensive Mental Health Assessments to ensure quality and compliance with Oregon Administrative Rules for each individual receiving mental health services for one or more continuous years.
- Maintain current knowledge of regulations governing mental health/co-occurring disorder and forensics treatment (e.g., JC, OAR, DEA, PSRB).
- Provide on call psychiatric coverage for patients within mental health programs, including fielding questions about medication administration or interactions, authorizing order changes or approving administration of medications prescribed by external providers. On call coverage is during business hours and shared after hours responsibility with comparable medical provider(s).
- Provide clinical guidance and make recommendations in event of emergencies, including but not limited to facilitating inpatient psychiatric admission.
- Provide consultation to clinical and residential staff to guide the treatment for patients.
- Coordinate Psychiatric, Primary Care Provider, and other specialists to ensure optimal patient health.
- Travel across sites for multiple programs and to handle emergency situations.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
- Assist Program and Medical Directors, managers, and supervisors with program development.
- Advise with the development and implementation of policy and procedures.
- Provide staff in-services as needed and within expertise on topics such as co-occurring disorders, psychotropic medication management and chronic health conditions.
Qualifications
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position may provide work guidance and have input for hiring and corrective action.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Must possess an active Nurse Practitioner license.
- Must possess Oregon PMHNP licensure with psychiatric privileges and license privileges to prescribe medications.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
- Relevant background in prescribing psychiatric medication to people with co-occurring substance use disorders.
- Comprehensive knowledge of integrated approaches (mental health and addictions) in evaluation, treatment principles, practices and techniques.
- Knowledge/experience in working with individuals from a forensics setting.
- Knowledge of regulation and laws governing mental health and addictions services, ethics, confidentiality and other related areas.
- Demonstrated consistency in the application of “6 Rights” of medication administration.
- Demonstrated understanding of and ability to adhere to established principles of patient safety.
- Make judgments in practice, substantiated with evidence, that integrate nursing science in the provision of safe, quality care and that promote the health of patients within a family and community context.
- Ability to utilize both oral and written communications skills to effectively communicate with patients, co-workers, community resources, supervisors, and various other individuals encountered in the course of performing work while maintaining patient confidentiality and establishing professional rapport.
- Ability to maintain professional communications and boundaries while managing complex situations and interacting with individuals diagnosed with substance use or co-occurring conditions.
- Ability to operate a computer, utilize basic MS Office programs, and effectively navigate and maintain patient records in an electronic medical records system.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Current unencumbered Oregon Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner license.
- Unrestricted DEA certificate to prescribe controlled substances.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to acquire within 90 days of hire.
- Crisis prevention certification (such as CPI) within 90 days of hire.
- A valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license.
Salary : $135 - $140
