THE BROAD

The Broad’s mission is to make contemporary art accessible to the widest possible audience. Founded in 2015 on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, the museum offers free general admission and presents an active Program of special exhibitions and innovative live events, all within a landmark building designed by Diller Scofidio Renfro. Welcoming around 900,000 visitors per year, The Broad is a bustling public space and serves as home to the Broad collection, one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art, which continues to grow as new artists and artworks are added. The museum is also the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library, which has been loaning collection works to museums around the world since 1984. To create greater public access, The Broad will break ground on a 55,000 square foot expansion in early 2025.

About The Position

The Broad is seeking a Curatorial Assistant to support collection research and maintenance, collection installations, and special exhibitions. Reporting to the Curator and Publications Manager and Curator and Exhibitions Manager, the Curatorial Assistant performs administrative and research tasks related to the Broad collection and the planning and implementing of exhibitions, including planning for upcoming museum expansion.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Conducts research, maintains checklists, and writes object labels for installations of collection works with the curatorial team, including supporting the upcoming museum expansion.
  • Develops biographical timelines, conducts research, and maintains checklists for exhibitions with the curatorial team.
  • Assist with loan correspondence and tracking, exhibition production, and installation with curatorial and collections management teams.
  • Contributes research, writing, and editing and assists with image permissions and all other tasks related to The Broad publications.
  • Researches, writes, and presents interpretive content about collection artists and artworks as well as artworks in consideration for acquisition.
  • Develops exhibition training materials for staff training with the curatorial team.
  • Give tours of The Broad’s galleries and exhibitions as assigned.
  • Drafts, revises, and updates for website content as assigned.
  • Liaises between curatorial and collections staff on logistics of installations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Art, Curatorial Studies, Museum Studies, or related field; a proven record of research and writing preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in modern and contemporary art; commitment to expanding art historical narratives to become more inclusive.
  • Ability to conduct, analyze, and organize primary and secondary research.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to write for a public audience and support the museum’s voice and style.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with proven ability to effectively manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to creatively troubleshoot and think critically to support the museum’s mission.
  • Ability to work independently as well as effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (primarily Illustrator and Photoshop) a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of Sketchup or other 3D rendering programs a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of Embark, TMS, or other collections management databases a plus.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or another language a plus.
  • Physical demands: Work with books, files, and computers. Additional movement through galleries during tours, installations, and work related to interpretive content.
  • Approach work with integrity and honesty. Support and demonstrate the museum’s culture of developing a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible environment for staff, contract staff, vendors, and visitors.
  • Work environment: Open office floorplan with collaborative environment.

Safety Requirements

  • All employees The Broad are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to certain exemptions as required by law.   • Ability to wear a mask during your scheduled work shifts if and when necessary.

  • Must adhere to COVID-19 policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The user must be able to remain stationary and use repetitive movements of wrists, hands, and fingers while working on the computer. The user must also occasionally bend, lift, and twist.

SCHEDULE

  • Work is typically performed onsite between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Curatorial Assistant should have the flexibility to on occasion be expected to work outside of regular business hours.

PAY RANGE

  • $26.50 - $28.89 per hour, based on applicant’s education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
