JOB TITLE: OR Clinical Supervisor
DEPARTMENT: Surgical Services
REPORTS TO: Surgical Services Director
JOB SUMMARY
The OR Clinical Supervisor will oversee and coordinate the activities of staff of the operating room and sterile processing personnel, ensuring adherence to established procedures and schedules. This includes supervising the procurement and maintenance of equipment and supplies, as well as staffing and training employees. The OR Clinical Supervisor will collaborate with other hospital departments and teams to provide safe, high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective care. The OR Clinical Supervisor will participate in the development and review of policies and procedures related to perioperative services, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and best practices. The OR Clinical Supervisor must maintain competence and be able to perform the job duties of a Surgical Nurse. The OR Clinical Supervisor must have a working knowledge of the materials specialist, OR Specialist, and Sterile Processing Department Tech. He/she must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Current Wyoming licensure as a Registered Nurse. Prefer Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum 2 years’ experience in OR, with additional experience in a critical care area preferred.
SKILLS
- Knowledge of perioperative and post-anesthesia care nursing principles.
- Knowledge of scheduling surgical cases, billing and supply ordering requirements.
- Ability to perform effectively in highly stressful situations.
- Must be able to write policies and procedures.
- Must be able to interact effectively with a wide variety of people.
- Must have proficient computer and typing skills.
- Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Outlook.
- Requires excellent communication skills.
- Ability to assume a leadership role and serve as an example to other employees.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications are required (AHA)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provision of competent direct patient care in the Operating Room and Sterile Processing.
- Clinical resource for knowledge and skills.
- Coordinate with director to develop and present required and recommended education to meet both Surgical Services and CRH needs.
- Provide supervisory support and leadership supporting goals of director and organization.
- Delegate and supervise/verify that staff is completing routine task assignments each day.
- Coordinate with director to provide coverage as needed.
- Assist with implementation and maintenance of facility documentation systems, including IS systems.
- Support the organization’s systems and processes, and participate in design and improvement activities.
- Coordinate with the director on policy and procedure development/revision/update that guides and supports patient care and/or department operations.
- Evaluate and select outside sources for needed services and supplies.
- Maintain an effective working relationship with the other departments and medical staff.
- Assure staff is following all professional precautions, current guidelines and recommendations.
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
In collaboration with the Surgical Services Director and when the Surgical Services Director is not available, the OR Clinical Supervisor will:
- Organize and provide for qualified, competent, cost effective staffing of department services using mechanisms for mix ratios, productivity, standards, schedule, work design, and personnel actions.
- Participate in the productivity monitoring system.
- Establish & maintain scheduling via the time & attendance system (currently TCP).
- Assume responsibility for staffing of the department.
- Perform job description of the Circulating RN or Surgical Tech as necessary, and workload permits. Evaluate work assignments to assure full utilization of personnel.
- Assume time and attendance duties. Approve vacations, overtime, excused absences, personal days and PTO/EIB use. Assist in payroll information regarding new employees, change in employee rate or positions, and hours worked.
- Assist Department Director in orientation, mentoring, training/education/in-service, performance evaluation, competency assessment, and disciplinary action using effective communication skills, tools, methods, and appropriate documentation systems.
- Mentor, develop, train, and oversee orientation.
FINANCIAL & PHYSICAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
To plan for and/or organize, acquire and maintain the supplies, equipment, space and other physical resources of the department to reduce waste/cost, achieve budget, improve patient care, meet hospital goals.
SAFETY OF PATIENT, EMPOLYEE AND PUBLIC
For department compliance with both department and hospital-wide systems for infection control, risk management, quality control, emergency preparedness, equipment management and government regulation for the protection of and response to patient/public and occupational safety.
For participating in hospital-wide systems for same:
- Assist staff with incident, accident and error forms, as necessary. Do Incident Follow-Up in YES/Risk Quality module. Analyze reason for all incidents and errors, discuss with personnel involved, and make written recommendations to Risk Manager as well as Surgical Services Director.
- Supervise professional staff in documenting medications and nursing care on medical records. Assure that nursing documentation on medical records is complete.
- Supervise staff in keeping equipment clean and in good repair. Orient staff to safety procedures in the department.
- Implement and coordinate the infection control policies as they relate to the department staff. Educate and orient new employees to proper infection control techniques.
- Oversee responsibility for checking and stocking emergency medications and lifesaving equipment.
- Assure that all rooms are kept clean, stocked and ready for use.

- The Clinical Supervisor should be able to function in the Surgical Services Department area as defined in the OR Circulating RN/ OR Surgical Technician job description.
- Director relief as assigned.
- Able to provide relief for Surgical Services Materials Specialist as needed.
- Able to provide relief for Surgical Services OR Specialist as needed.
- Attend and participate in department head meetings, classes, committees, or workshops as requested by Director.
- Participate in community activities designed to promote CRH, community health and education, with approval of Director.
- Assist with teaching nursing principles, as necessary. Evaluate students as requested by clinical faculty. Provide student experience as requested.
- Participate in in-service programs as both student and teacher. Attend workshops as possible and apply knowledge, as applicable, to nursing practice. Maintain and enhance own knowledge and keep skills up to date. Assess education needs of staff and plan, organize and promote programs to meet those needs.
