JOB TITLE: Ultrasonographer

DEPARTMENT: Radiology

REPORTS TO: Radiology Director

JOB SUMMARY

The Ultrasound Technologist must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill sets necessary to provide appropriate care to his/her assigned patient(s)/area(s). This individual will safely address Ultrasound patients of all age groups and will perform Ultrasound studies using appropriate imaging and ancillary equipment. They will also address Ultrasound in a manner that ensures excellent patient care, while consistently maintaining accurate and reliable documentation/record keeping. Additional modality responsibilities will be based on the individual skill sets and licensure/certifications held. This ultimately means that an Ultrasound technologist may be asked to address other modalities as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology and/or Ultrasonography program.
  • Current ARRT (S) -or- ARDMS.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field is preferred.
  • Current Wyoming Technologist license for Radiologic Technologist is preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of one-year clinical experience (2 years is preferred).

SKILLS

The department of Radiology has a career pathway to help address growth potentials for licensed technologists and is defined by the department Director. The growth potential pattern is as follows:

  • Tech I – ARRT -or- ARDMS in one modality or anatomical area (i.e., ARRT, R -or- ARDMS Abdomen) 
  • Tech II – ARRT-or- ARDMS certified in two modalities/parts (i.e., ARRT, R, CT -or- ARDMS Abd, OB/GYN).
  • Tech III - ARRT-or- ARDMS certified in three modalities/parts (i.e., ARRT, R, CT, M -or- ARDMS Abd, OB/GYN, RVT).
  • Tech IV – ARRT -or- ARDMS certified in four modalities/parts (i.e., ARRT, R, CT, M, MR -or- ARDMS Abd, OB/GYN, RVT, MSKS).

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

BLS (AHA)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Assume responsibility for the safety of the patient during the sonographic examination.
  • Review patient medical history and supporting clinical information.
  • Ensure that the sonography examination order is complete, contains relevant information, and meets the standard of “medical necessity”.
  • Evaluate any contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and the patient’s inability or unwillingness to tolerate the examination and associated procedures.
  • Communicate with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient’s ability to understand.
  • Use proper patient positioning tools, devices, equipment adjustment, and ergonomically correct scanning techniques to ensure patient comfort and safety, and to prevent compromised data acquisition or musculoskeletal injury to the sonographer.
  • Conduct patient clinical assessment and perform the diagnostic medical sonography exam ordered by the referring provider in accordance with professional and organizational protocols.
  • Use independent, professional and ethical judgement to safely perform sonographic exams.
  • Identify and document any limitations during the exam.
  • Review images and address appropriate worksheets.
  • Maintain patient privacy HIPAA.
  • Will perform clerical duties as necessary and directed by radiology leadership.
  • Will participate in continuing education in an effort to maintain high quality services.
  • Will schedule patients/exams as needed.
  • Adheres to established departmental/organizational policies/procedures/protocols.
  • Must participate in departmental QA/QC programs.
  • Interacts with patients, providers, vendors and staff in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Verifies patients using a minimum of two patient identifiers.
  • Provides excellent customer service, explaining exam information to our patients in a clear manner.
  • Completes exams and charges appropriately.
  • Cleans and disinfects equipment accordingly.
  • At times, is able to address departmental needs with little to no support.
  • Rotates shifts and works holidays as required in clinics or hospital.
  • Performs ancillary duties as requested by Radiology leadership.
  • Able to work well in situations of stress.
  • Must be able/willing to take call as needed/required.
  • Must be able/willing to learn other imaging modalities as needed.
  • Must be willing and able to cover in other clinics throughout the CRH system.
  • Able/willing to perform other duties as assigned.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

  • Generally speaking, the department requires multi-modality technologists; therefore, the Ultrasound Technologist will support other modalities as per skill sets and licensures/certifications actively held.
  • Employee will sign additional job descriptions based on skill sets and licensures/certifications actively held.
  • Attends department meetings, in-services and disaster drills.
