Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
The Maintenance/Custodian is a year-round, 12-month position, responsible for routine cleaning, minor maintenance, and custodial tasks in and around the Tribal School buildings according to a schedule provided by the Facilities Director or available in the Facilities Management System. These tasks will include typical custodial duties (sweep, mop floors; wash windows and walls; vacuums and spot-cleans carpets; empty and clean waste receptacles; clean and maintain restrooms; clean and maintain interior and exterior of Tribal School buildings and pickup refuse from grounds; organize custodial supplies and equipment, etc.). Duties also include minor maintenance tasks, including changing light bulbs, routing cables, moving furniture, mounting shelves or other hardware on walls, adjusting door latches and hinges, helping refinish gym floor, getting fuel for the tractor, etc. Additional duties include grounds keeping (weeding, mowing, mulching, snow plowing and shoveling, etc.) and driving school vehicles to pick up supplies. Must show the highest of professional standards and promotes a positive image of the Tribe and its administration at all times. Must be culturally sensitive to a diverse customer population and able to interact tactfully and positively with Tribal members, all levels of tribal staff and management. Perform other duties as assigned to promote the efficiency and effectiveness of the Coeur d’Alene Tribal School.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Must pass extensive background check prior to employment and every 5th consecutive year of employment thereafter according to the following: §25 CFR 12 Part 32, §25 CFR 63 Part 17, and Public Law 101-647. No misdemeanor or felony arrests or offenses related to abuse, Domestic Violence, neglect, or endangerment.
  • No crimes related to dishonesty or theft.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in custodial, grounds keeping, and minor maintenance work and safe work practices.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, fixtures, and work areas.
  • Skills in the operation of equipment related to custodial, grounds keeping and maintenance work.
  • Physical strength and ability to perform a variety of routine custodial tasks in the care and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Must be able to read, comprehend and apply cleaning product and equipment use instructions, SDS safety sheets for chemicals, cleaning chemical dilution rates and instructions, cleaning schedules and written instructions for record keeping.
  • At least one (1) year experience in janitorial/custodian work or have other relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations governing normal products and chemicals of the industry.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement under stressful situations.
  • Excellent attendance record in previous positions.
  • Excellent employment references from previous positions.
  • Ability, aptitude and willingness to work consistently in a professional manner.
  • Must maintain absolute confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to follow standardized routines, maintain supply inventories accurately, operate typical machines, equipment and maintenance vehicles skillfully and safely.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s license at the time of application and during employment.
  • Ability to keep legible and accurate records.
  • Familiarity with typical office computer tasks, including using email and Microsoft Office apps and using interactive webpages via the browser.
  • Ability to learn and use the necessary features in our online Facilities Management System (“Maximo”).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees, staff, and the public.
  • Must work irregular hours and be on “on-call” status at any time.

Total compensation is based on base compensation, median retirement fund contributions, and current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates (including medical, dental, life insurance, long-term disability, and leave). The total will vary depending on the employee’s enrollment choices; for this position, the Estimated Total Compensation is $43,280 -$69,600 annually.

The Coeur d’Alene Tribe reserves the right to hire according to its Indian Preference Policy. Applicants are subject to a pre-employment drug test and at-random testing following employment. Positions with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe are subject to a 6-month orientation period.
