Reporting to the VP, Environment & Permitting, the Manager, Environment will provide oversight and support to develop and implement strategies and programs that will reduce risk and improve environmental performance while supporting environmental controls, policies, regulations, permits and licenses at Coeur’s mining operations. The successful candidate will collaborate across both corporate and site business groups.

Preference for Chicago-based candidates but open to considering strong candidates who would work remotely with travel to Chicago as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, environment, community, and the ability to work safely.
  • Develop and implement programs, policies, and procedures to create, track, and enforce environmental controls that provide layers of risk management to protect the environment, comply with the regulatory requirements, and promote operational resiliency.
  • Develop and implement strategies that drive compliance with environmental policies, regulations, permits, and licenses.
  • Provide technical leadership and expertise on environmental issues regarding the management of environmental risks and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide strategic direction and support for the implementation of environmental management systems across North American sites and projects.
  • Proactively anticipate issues and solve problems in the context of operational requirements.
  • Monitor and track compliance.
  • Provide guidance to mine site personnel on matters related to permit conditions, reporting requirements, and compliance.
  • Provide strategic guidance and technical support for Coeur’s Environmental, Health, Safety and Corporate Responsibility (EHSSR) program, including environmental permitting and environmental management for all Coeur mining locations, along with the development of Standards, SOPs, etc.
  • Analyze technical and closure issues peculiar to each operation. Tasks may include site audits, compliance and environmental performance reviews, and annual analysis of closure costs applicable to ARO reports for Coeur accounting.
  • Develop project charters and execution plans, contractor work scopes, cost estimates and forecasts, and proactively manage projects as assigned.
  • Prepare status reports and provide updates to senior managers on current projects or issues.
  • Provide environmental expertise to the Coeur management team on due diligence reviews of new projects and existing project expansion plans.
  • Enhance training and knowledge programs so that employees, contractors, and visitors act according to developed environmental management plans aligned with Coeur Mining and mine site policies.
  • Assist the mines in maintaining a complete list of regulatory requirements specified in all environmental permits, licenses, and authorizations and communicate these requirements to project or operational environmental staff.
  • Conduct environmental audits or reviews for all facets of environmental regulation including waste management, water quality and supply, air quality, biodiversity, materials management, Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) reporting, and mine closure analysis.
  • Prepare or review technical and permitting documents as necessary.
  • Develop presentation and meeting materials.

Qualifications

  • BSc in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology or Earth Sciences or equivalent. MSc an asset
  • Approximately 7-10 years of environmental program management experience within mining, oil and gas, or heavy industrial settings
  • Familiarity with government processes and experience engaging with government agencies and officials on policy and regulatory matters
  • Environmental system management experience
  • Tailings management experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • AutoCAD/GIS experience preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, and project management skills
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships with site personnel (managers, hourly) and other external stakeholders (regulatory authorities, NGOs) – tactful, mature, professional
  • Broad-base technical mining experience and how these aspects impact regulatory requirements
  • Broad-base knowledge of international environmental regulations as they apply to mining projects in a variety of jurisdictions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a fast-moving team
  • Must be able to identify sensitive issues and respect confidentiality
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 25% of the time
