Head Coach
Responsible to: Principal
Athletic Director
Qualifications:
- Meets coaching criteria as defined by TSSAA and/or other state interscholastic sport
governing association
- Relevant coaching experience preferred
- Strong verbal and interpersonal skills
Essential Responsibilities:
- Follows all school rules and system policies
- Follows all rules and regulations regarding the sport as defined in the TSSAA
handbook
- Provides technical expertise in coaching the assigned athletic activity
- Understands and follows the proper administrative line of command and refers all
requests or grievances through proper channel
- Maintains professionalism on and off the field
- Strives to develop rapport and serves as a positive role model
- Teaches student athletes the values of good citizenship, honesty, integrity, self-
discipline, courage, loyalty and sportsmanship
- Encourages community partnerships that enhance district programs and services
- Works with the media to develop a positive relationship
- Works with the athletic director to evaluate program needs
- Makes preparation for any athletic event in his/her respective program
- Promotes the proper use and care of school property
- Regularly inspects playing surface for safety concerns
- Attends all mandatory programs (e.g. TSSAA required meetings, first aid/CPR
training, etc.).
- Encourages student involvement in program activities. Helps parents and students
understand program objectives. Explains student responsibilities (e.g., scholastic
eligibility, parental permission, physical exams, training/performance schedules,
requirements for letters, optional insurance coverage, waiver forms, etc.)
- Organizes team tryouts. Maintains the integrity of the selection process
- Organizes and carries out a practice schedule. Coordinates activities with the
school calendar
- Assumes responsibility for the development of off-season activities (e.g., summer
training, clinics, etc.)
- Teaches precautions and procedures to help students prevent injuries. Ensures that
medical authorization forms are on file and readily available. Promptly documents
all injuries that require attention
- Participates in student recognition programs
- Rides bus with players, when applicable, to and from games, contests and camps
- Helps with supervision responsibilities related to the preparation of athletic fields,
and practice areas
- Assigns and keeps track of athletic equipment issued to students and staff, and
maintains inventory of all new and used equipment
- Ensures that students keep locker rooms and practice areas orderly
- Helps arrange transportation and lodging for sanctioned activities
- Obtains permission to be away when duties conflict with other assigned duties
- Takes precautions to ensure staff/student safety. Does not leave student
unsupervised
- Works closely with the athletic boosters association
- Establishes a working relationship with system schools and coaches at all levels
- Gives Athletic Director a copy of all communications sent home with students

- Other responsibilities and/or duties may be required and assigned
