Group Fitness Instructor


POSITION SUMMARY

  • The Group Fitness Instructor will lead members, in a group environment, through a pre-arranged format of exercises designed to enhance overall fitness, strength and endurance, while ensuring that the safety of the members is not compromised. The Group Fitness Instructor will also serve as a resource to educate members on various aspects of fitness. This is an instructor who has had specific training in a group fitness class format and/or has been teaching for multiple years and also holds a nationally recognized group fitness certifications, (AFFA or ACE), and is fully qualified to lead group exercise in many areas of fitness.

OVERVIEW

  • The evaluation is to assure individual performance, departmental goals and organizational goals are aligned. It is designed to support communication between the manager and the employee. Employee perception of their own performance is very important. To maximize the benefit of this process, both the manager and the employee participate in the evaluation process.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality of material and information accessed and reviewed.
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Ability to move freely, reach, bend, and complete light lifting.
  • Ability to use good body mechanics while performing daily job functions and ability to follow specific OSHA guidelines.
  • Ability to maintain attendance to meet standard job practices.

B. Education

  • High School diploma or GED

C. Licensure

  • BCLS, AED, First Aid completion within 45 days of employment.
  • Group Fitness Instructor Certification within 90 days of employment.

G. Essential physical requirements

  • Light: Exert up to 20 lb. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lb. of force frequently - >75%
  • Medium: Exert 20 – 50 lb. of force occasionally and/or up to 15 lb. of force frequently - >75%
  • Heavy: Exert 50 – 100 lb. of force occasionally and/or up to 30 lb. of force frequently - 1-24%

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • Below are those tasks, duties, and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the position’s purpose and objectives. These are critical or fundamental to the performance of the position. They are the major functions for which the person in the position is held accountable. Following are the essential functions of the position, along with the corresponding performance standards.
  • Pre-class Preparation

o Arrive at class location 10 to 15 minutes ahead of scheduled start time to be available to interact with members, answer questions, inquire about their fitness progress, introduce and orient new participants. Group Fitness Instructors should know their participants on an individual basis and have a good sense of their fitness capabilities.

o Clothing should be appropriate fitness attire. It should not prohibit participants from seeing proper form, alignment and movement of the body. However, clothing should not be revealing in an inappropriate manner. Proper footwear should be worn at all times.

o Prepare appropriate music for class. Refrain from using music with offensive language.

o Ensure all equipment is functioning correctly and have microphones ready.

  • During Class Responsibilities

o Introduce yourself and the format of the class each and every time.

o Ensure a comfortable and welcoming environment for each and every participant

o Inquire if there are any “first-timers” in the group and if so, assess their fitness level in as private a manner as possible.

o Make sure all verbal instructions are clear and that the volume, tempo of music and overall atmosphere is conducive to hearing, teaching, learning and having fun.

o Continually monitor participants to ensure all participants are using correct form. Offer variations of the routine to accommodate all fitness levels.

o Create a motivational and fun environment for all participants.

  • After Class Responsibilities

o Remove all music and return microphone to proper place.

o Make sure room is in order for the next class to begin.

o Answer any questions/concerns participants may have.

o Solicit feedback from participants about the class.

  • Additional Responsibilities

o Make sure that class begins and ends promptly. If necessary, make adjustments to the flow of the class to ensure adherence to the schedule.

o If the Group Fitness Instructor is teaching the last class of the day, please follow proper closing procedures as outlined by the Director.

o In the event that a Group Fitness Instructor cannot fulfill a scheduled class, it is his/her responsibility to find a qualified/approved substitute and notify the Group Fitness Director if there is a problem finding a substitute.

o Group Fitness Instructors must be dependable and consistent in their class schedules. Anyone committing to teach a class should make all arrangements so that substitutes or cancellations are a rare occurrence.

o Attend all required staff meetings as necessary.

o Ensure that proper time recording procedures are followed correctly and in a timely manner.

o Prepare any incident and/or witness reports as necessary in the event of accidents.

o Maintain a positive and professional attitude towards his/her responsibilities, fellow employees, and members.

o Promote the facility and it's programming as much as possible.
