POSITION SUMMARY

  • The Phlebotomist procures and routes laboratory specimens from outpatient and inpatient collections, maintains laboratory files and is responsible for related clerical duties in the laboratory.
  • Understands age specific requirements for patients of all ages and is able to demonstrate required competencies.
  • Other duties may be assigned as required by laboratory management.

OVERVIEW

  • The evaluation is to assure individual performance, departmental goals and organizational goals are aligned. It is designed to support communication between the manager and the employee. Employee perception of their own performance is very important. To maximize the benefit of this process, both the manager and the employee participate in the evaluation process.

  • Education
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Graduation from approved Phlebotomy program preferred
  • Licensure
    • None required.

    • Previous experience is desired, but not required.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • Below are those tasks, duties, and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the position’s purpose and objectives. These are critical or fundamental to the performance of the position. They are the major functions for which the person in the position is held accountable. Following are the essential functions of the position, along with the corresponding performance standards.
    • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick, and bleeding time) according to established procedures.
      • Performs venipuncture using correct technique and with minimal discomfort to the patient.
      • Performs fingerstick procedures with correct technique when unable to obtain specimen by veniuncture.
      • Performs heelsticks on infants with correct technique.
      • Performs bleeding times according to procedure.
      • Understands age specific requirements for venipuncture (communication, selection of blood collection devices, minimizes blood volumes collected). This includes neonates, infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school age, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
    • Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
      • Identifies patient by checking name and patient identifiers on patient armband and compares with request and patient response.
      • Labels all specimen tubes at bedside following established procedure.
    • Determines priority of Stat, Routine, and Timed draws. Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to the lab for testing.
      • Prioritizes Stat requests. Draws Stats within 15 minutes of request and are transported to laboratory on a priority basis.
      • Draws severe trauma and/or disaster patients and transports specimens immediately to laboratory for testing.
      • Prioritizes Timed requests. Draws Timed requests and transports to laboratory for testing within 30 minutes.
      • Prioritizes Routine requests. Makes routine rounds as scheduled and transports specimens to laboratory within one hour.
      • Draws re-collects in the Emergency Department and transports specimens immediately to the laboratory for testing.
      • Understands glucose tolerance concepts and shows ability to administer glucola and collect timed specimens as required.
    • Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions.
      • Registers contract patients in system, completing all required fields with correct information.
      • Interprets physician orders and performs order entry with no errors. Makes additional calls to physician for clarification when necessary.
      • Generates collection lists, labels, and has the ability to add or cancel orders as appropriate.
    • Serves as a receptionist, greets patients, and answers phones as required.
      • Answers phone in a courteous manner according to hospital policy. Is able to answer basic questions, query, print or fax laboratory results, and transfer when required
      • Greets patients in a courteous manner. Explains procedure and ensures their comfort while waiting for tests.
    • Performs related laboratory duties.
      • Ensures charting is performed accurately and timely by end of scheduled shift
      • Ensures filing is performed accurately and timely by end of scheduled shift.
      • Ensures daily temperature logs are completed by end of scheduled shift.
      • Adheres to infection control and safety policies and procedures. Wear appropriate PPE's at all times.
      • Ensures supplies are received and properly stored. Notifies lab management when supplies are low.
    • Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department.
      • Ensures phlebotomy trays are cleaned and stocked with in-date supplies.
      • Ensures all safety and waste container are properly disposed according to infection control and safety procedures.
      • Maintains clean equipment and is responsible for neatness throughout the department.
    • Helps co-workers when needed and communicates to ensure an orderly work-flow.
      • Assists co-workers with collection and clerical assignments when required.
      • Informs patient care services of any delays in collections
      • Informs supervisor of problems in completing assignments for any reason.
    • Readily accepts changes in assignments or schedules.
      • Willing to adjust personal schedule in case of need. Comes in when called.
      • Willing to learn and implement new procedures as required.
    • Aids in the training of new employees and students in the performance of duties.
      • Works with new employees and students to assist in training of departmental procedures.
      • Acts as a resource to the new employee or student.
    • Follows all organizational and department policies and procedures.
    • Functions as a role model for current and new staff.
      • Accepts assignment as preceptor for new staff.
      • Facilitates problem resolution among peers as observed by manager and peers.
      • Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff toward the organization.
    • Understands principles of correct specimen collection and handling of non-blood specimens, and is able to give patient instructions.
      • Facilitates collection of all non-blood specimens including urine, semen, stool, and sputum specimens.
      • Facilitates collection of urine specimens for drugs of abuse testing.
      • Consistently completes and obtains signatures on all forms required for drugs of abuse testing.
