SUMMARY:
The primary purpose of this position is to plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operation of the nursing services department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern the facility and as directed by the Administrator and the Medical Director to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY:
As the Director of Nursing, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibilities, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

EMPLOYMENT AT WILL:
Employment with Fahrney-Keedy is “at will.” Either the associate or Fahrney-Keedy may terminate the employment relationship for any reason at any time without notice, regardless of the length of employment or the granting of benefits of any kind, including but not limited to benefits which provide for vesting based on length of service.

ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS

Collaborates with other health care professionals including consultants, government agencies and advocacy groups in the development and support of resident care, administrative functions, and facility mission.

Develops and maintains nursing policies and procedures that conform to current standards of nursing practice, facility mission, and state and federal regulations.

Maintains knowledge of all current state and federal regulations and facility policies.

Provides fiscal oversight and management of the nursing department.

Provides direct nursing care as necessary including clinical care and resident assessments.

Assigns enough GNA's for each shift to ensure that routing nursing care is provided to meet the daily nursing care needs of each resident.

Assists Human Resources in developing performance evaluation schedules, criteria, and annual reviews for the nursing services department.

Develops and implements a nursing services organizational structure.

Develops methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services to ensure the continuity of resident care.

Develops, maintains, and periodically updates written job descriptions for each level of nursing staff in accordance with pertinent laws and regulations.

Develops, maintains, and periodically updates written facility policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing services department.

Reviews facility policies at least annually.

Maintains a reference library of written nursing material (Physician's Desk Reference (PDR), regulations, standards of practice, etc. that will assist nursing services in meeting the day-to-day needs of the resident.

Participates in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.

Performs administrative duties such as completing forms, compiling reports, producing, and approving evaluations, studies, etc.

Oversees and monitors facility's abuse prevention program.

Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates, and directs the nursing services department as well as its programs and activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern nursing care facilities.

Participates in team meetings as directed such as Care Plan Committee meetings, QAPI Committee, Risk Management and Safety Committee, etc.

NURSING CARE FUNCTIONS

Ensures residents receive individualized care that is culturally competent and based on resident preferences.

Assigns sufficient Geriatric Nursing Assistants (GNA's) for each shift to ensure that routine nursing care is provided to meet the daily nursing care needs of each resident.

Ensures nursing staffs' performance evaluations are completed on time.

Determines the staffing needs of the Nursing department necessary to meet the total nursing needs of the resident population including specific skills identified in the facility assessment.

Develops work assignments and schedule staff hours; ensures required staff ratio postings are completed.

Ensures that disciplinary actions involving GNA's and Nurses are reported to the State agencies indicated for incidents determined to substantiate abuse allegations.

Makes daily rounds of the nursing services department to ensure that all nursing services staff are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.

Reports occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals in accordance with the facility's policies and procedures governing accidents and incidents.

Reviews complaints and grievances made or filed by department staff; develops action plans, as necessary.

Attends continuing education programs to remain knowledgeable with current regulations and nursing best practices.

Reports all accidents and incidents according to policies and procedures.

Follows established safety policies and procedures.

Reports any suspected conditions that may be communicable or infectious.

Ensures that the resident environment remains as free of accident hazards as much as possible and that residents receive adequate supervision and assistive devices to prevent accidents.

Ensures that nursing staff follow established infection prevention and control procedures.

Recommends to the Administrator the equipment and supply needs of the department to meet the needs of the resident population as identified in the annual facility assessment.

Prepares and plans the nursing services department's budget and submits to the Administrator for review, recommendations, and/or approval.

Recommends to the Administrator the equipment and supply needs of the nursing department.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

RESIDENT RIGHTS:
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information including protected health information. Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.
  • Ensure that you treat all residents fairly with kindness, dignity, and respect.
  • Knock and wait for permission to enter all residents' rooms.
  • Report all grievances and complaints made by the residents to the Director of Nursing.
  • Report all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property to the Fahrney-Keedy Abuse Coordinator.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to calculate numbers and amounts such as rate of pay increases, decreases, percentages, etc.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must be a supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of teamwork and team concept.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with staff, residents, family members, visitors, vendors, government agencies, etc.
  • Must possess the ability and willingness to work harmoniously with other employees.
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, the appearance of work areas, for safety and proper performance of assigned duties.
  • Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as the ability to deescalate difficult employees.
  • Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace.
EDUCATION

  • Must possess an unencumbered active license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Maryland.
PRIOR/RELATED EXPERIENCE:
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a supervisor in a nursing care facility, hospital, or other related health care facility.
  • Must have, as a minimum, one (1) year of experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficient use of Internet applications
  • Proficient use of social media
  • Comfortable learning new software applications
  • Creativity is a plus.
PHYSICAL & SENSORY REQUIREMENTS (With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices):

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, staff, and support agencies.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which include a medical and physical examination.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move and/or lift a minimum of twenty-five pounds to a minimum height of five feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of fifty feet.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
