Provides direct and indirect patient care in the clinic setting. Provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care; meets the communication needs of patient and family; provides care that reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and clinic policies, procedures and standards. Communicates with physicians and team members about changes in patient's clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology.
Requirements:Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited School Vocational Nursing
- Current licensure in the State of Texas with renewal as required by law
- Previous experience in family practice nursing highly preferred.
- BLS certification
Position Responsibilities:
- Provides direct patient care under the supervision of an RN, evaluates outcomes, consults with other health team members as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
- Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment, under the supervision of a RN, on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the general patient population.
- Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
- Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
- Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments and special procedures.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to team leader, co-workers and physicians.
- Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of a RN.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family.
- Interacts professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family in the formation of the plan of care.
- Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning; includes family in teaching, as appropriate.

- Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
- Demonstrates knowledge of lab requirements, requisitions.
- Maintains established outpatient clinic policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental, and infection prevention and control standards.
- Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with outpatient clinic standards.
- Answers telephone calls in a professional manner; refers patient problems to outpatient clinic physician; schedules patient appointments.
- Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment.
- Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
- Maintains a good working relationship with all staff members of the clinic.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Response to the patient is appropriate in emergency or physically distressful situations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of general practice of medicine and medical terminology

Equipment Operated:
Phone, computer, stethoscope, echocardiography (EKG) machine, ear-washing instruments, blood pressure cuff, speculums, and other nursing items. May involve use of walkers, wheelchairs, pulse oximetry, and oxygen tanks.
Work Environment:
Medical exam and treatment rooms and medical offices. Environmental setting (lighting, temperature, air quality, acoustics) controlled.
