What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Day Camp Counselor position at COGNiTiON?
Hours/ Rate: 21-30 hours per week, $12-$16/hr depending on experience and skill
Supervisor: Kimmee Miller, Executive Director/ Camp Director; Assistant Director
Job Overview: The Camp Counselor (CC) will educate and inspire children to learn and explore different topics/concepts in a dynamic way. The individual will learn about and understand the outlined camp subject matter in order to best help design and facilitate projects and planned activities in a fun day-camp setting. The CC will be in charge of up to 10 youth campers, and responsible for guiding them through pre-planned discussions, hands-on activities, art projects, outdoor explorations, snack/lunch breaks, and games. Project setup and teardown will also be required. CC will be a positive ambassador for COGNiTiON and a respectable role model while working with campers and their families.
Qualifications: High School completion and some college instruction or equivalent training/experience in Education, Recreation, or related field of study preferred. In lieu of High School completion or college credit; current High School students with evidence of good grades and demonstrated experience in teaching, informal education, leadership, or related extracurricular activities are acceptable (but will work as assistants to adult counselors if under 18 yr old). Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required. An upbeat disposition, outgoing nature, and positive attitude are ideal characteristics.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Will have a strong working knowledge and/or ability to learn basic elementary science concepts.
- Will encourage participants to explore all learning opportunities related to camp subjects.
- Will easily adapt to the needs of a diverse range of campers representing a range of ages, backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities; and demonstrate good problem solving skills.
- Will attend pertinent trainings, follow directions described in Cognition's “Day Camp Policies and Procedures” document, and will be invited to participate in camp planning.
- Will lead assigned campers on scheduled days of day camp. (June-August 2024).
- Will ensure all program materials are in order and prepared for the day.
- Will supervise campers and make sure the center’s materials and exhibits are used properly and areas are cleaned up after activities.
- Will maintain a high level of professionalism and responsibility while supervising campers and representing the organization.
- Will complete all other tasks assigned by the supervisor.
