What We Do

The Cohen Defense Group’s indigent defense practice serves courthouses in Roseville, Auburn, Nevada City, and Truckee, California. We have office locations in all four cities, which allows us to be accessible to the Placer and Nevada County courts when needed. Our private practice covers the eastern portion of the Central Valley, including Sacramento, Yolo, Yuba, and Sutter Counties, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in El Dorado, Placer, and Nevada Counties, and the Eastern Sierra communities in the Lake Tahoe area. Our attorneys live everywhere from Truckee to Sacramento and have all office locations available to them.

Responsibilities and Duties

Historically we have hired new lawyers and trained them in our style of practice with the goal of having them comfortably handle all aspects of criminal representation from arraignment through trial and the ability to manage a calendar of cases. Such attorneys who come to work for us can expect to be able to handle any criminal case in any California courtroom within two years of working here. This entry level position will focus on representation of indigent clients charged with misdemeanor offenses, domestic violence crimes, and DUI charges from arraignment through trial including extensive motion work. In addition, the position involves participation in and development of private practice criminal cases in our home county, Placer, as well as regionally in Sacramento, Sutter, Yuba, Yolo, El Dorado, and Nevada counties.

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate for the position will have a proven interest in criminal defense as demonstrated by their summer employment, law school course selection and performance, moot court participation, and criminal practice clinic involvement. All applicants must be proficient in legal research and writing, capable of adapting to new technology, and must be members of the California State Bar or awaiting bar results.

Benefits

For rookie applicants, the position has a base salary comparable to a starting position in a public defender's office. In addition, the firm provides bonus compensation for development and participation in the private practice. We provide benefits including paid vacation, a 401(k) plan with employer matching, health insurance, MCLE, and malpractice coverage. Dental and Vision plans are available as well.
