POSITION TITLE: Preschool Lead Teacher
DEPARTMENT: Early Childhood
SUPERVISED BY (TITLE): Early Childhood Director
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for planning and implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum and activities for preschool-age children in accordance with the policies and philosophies if the Cohn Early Childhood Learning Center and for creating community with children and families.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:
- Four-year degree in Early Childhood Education or related field, or Four-year non-related degree and two years’ experience in an early childhood setting
- Associated degree or two-year Child Development Degree and four years in an early childhood setting, or
- High School Diploma and four or more years in early childhood education
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES NECESSARY:
Knowledge of developmentally appropriate educational practice for early childhood. Knowledge of the developmental stages of young children. Knowledge of classroom management and teaching techniques.
INTERPERSONAL, CUSTOMER SERVICES AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS UTILIZED:
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with children, their families and staff. Must relate well to children. Interact in a positive manner with other staff members. This position calls for an enthusiastic, creative individual, who is well organized, a self-starter, someone with excellent people skills that can motivate and enrich the daily experiences of the children, parents, and staff.
- Must be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the LJCC and the Early Childhood Department’s philosophy and goals.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer, talk and hear, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel and crouch. During the summer, this position requires spending time outside and at the pool, and the ability to run to opposite ends of the LJCC campus to address crisis situations.
The employee must have the physical strength and ability to lift, carry and/or move children or other objects up to 50 pounds.
JOB DESCRIPTION
PRESCHOOL LEAD TEACHER
Duties and responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Planning, supervising and implementing the program for the class in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the school.
- Gearing the program to the needs of individual children with concerns for their interests, handicaps, special talents and individual style and pace of learning.
- Planning a warm, safe environment that is orderly, clean and appealing and is planned with inquiry and discovery in mind.
- Interacting with children and encouraging their involvement in activities.
- Planning weekly lesson plans and providing teacher assistants an opportunity to have input in the program.
- Developing curriculum around children’s interests and in accordance with the goals and objectives for the classroom
- Planning and executing daily activities in art, music, language development, and motor development.
- Planning and executing daily activities in science, math, and multicultural experiences.
- Documenting evolution of curriculum and learning (using journals, portfolios, newsletters, etc.)
- Observe and keep notes on children at least weekly
- Establishing and maintaining good communication with parents through parent conferences twice per year and informally on a daily basis.
- Using appropriate and positive discipline techniques
- Maintaining attendance records and emergency information.
- Attending all staff meetings and recommended training programs
- Participating in staff discussions and group process
- Attending Open House and PTO functions
- Keeping current with developments in the profession.
- Supervising and training assistants assigned to your classroom.
Plus, any additional responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director of Early Childhood Education. This individual will function as a member of the LJCC staff, subject to all privileges and responsibilities as outlined in the JCC’s Personnel Code.
