The Office of Residential Experience at Colby College is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for a Residential Experience Intern. Working directly within the Office of Residential Experience and reporting to the Associate Director of Residential Education, this summer’s intern will be responsible for assisting with a variety of special projects to develop further the residential goals and strategic initiatives of the office and the Dean of the College Division. This position will collaborate with professional staff across the college to prepare residential initiatives for the upcoming academic year and beyond. Individuals with strong interest in making impacts and being directly involved in decision making and future planning are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.

Key Outcomes for this Summer’s Intern
- Benchmark upper-division student programming models; develop and recommend future direction for this type of programming for the 2025-2026 academic year;
- Assist with the development of a sustainable pilot program for a senior year residential experience for students residing in independent living areas on campus;
- Assist with multiple projects integral to the office’s strategic plan and future direction; and
- Explore potential career interests through informational interviews and connections with members of the Colby College community.
Dates and internship availability are negotiable and include a possible window from May 20, 2025 through August 8, 2025.
- This possible window consists of 12 total weeks with the option for 1-2 weeks of unpaid vacation. Vacation time is to be taken in coordination with Residential Experience staffing and the Associate Director of Residential Education, and must be taken before July 21, 2025.
- Final start and end dates are negotiable and based on the intern’s availability, and residential space turnover and cleaning between academic year usage and summer programs usage. Colby College understands potential conflicts of dates with graduate program end/start dates.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Strategic Responsibilities:
- Support the planning and development of undergraduate residence hall staff training to be implemented in late August.
- Review programming materials to be included as part of the Community Development Model (programming model utilized by academic year Community Advisor staff).
- Review and revise existing assessment practices and work in conjunction with the Associate Director of Residential Education to develop new assessment methods for the student staff and residential experience.
- Develop passive and active educational elements to supplement the residential experience, including important residence hall signage and information on social norms.
Support the day-to-day administration of the summer housing residential experience, consisting of student concerns, community development events, staff, facility and student behavior concerns, etc.
- Assist in Summer programming efforts planned by student staff members.
- Support and collaborate with the Assistant Dean and Director of Housing Administration to maintain up-to-date housing assignment information and assist with the necessary processes to maintain housing occupancy, including first-year assignments and Summer Housing Assignments.
- Speak with and address general student and family concerns directed to the Office of Residential Experience.
- While the intern position helps support the endeavors and initiatives of Colby College, it is equally important to identify specific areas of professional focus and interest of the intern to tailor their internship experience best.
- Earned Bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in a Master’s degree program in education, counseling, student affairs and/or higher education.
- Demonstrated maturity, tact, and professionalism to represent and work independently on behalf of the Office of Residential Experience in a para-professional capacity.
- Proven ability to work independently and as a team member, establish priorities and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse community.
- Deep commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive campus community;
- Possess strong interpersonal communication, planning, decision-making, and critical-thinking skills
- Must be flexible, have excellent attention to detail, show initiative, and have a results-driven philosophy with the ability to problem-solve and work collaboratively.
- Previous residential leadership experience at the undergraduate and graduate level (i.e. Resident Assistant, Community Desk Worker, Graduate Assistant Hall Director).
- Demonstrated understanding of student development theory and its practical implementation in educational settings.
- $512.75/week (35 hours/week)**
- Potential pay range: $4,614.75-$6,153.00 (for 9-12 weeks - as determined by start/end date and/or scheduled vacation)***
- Full on-campus meal plan allowance (3 dining hall meals a day for the duration of the internship)
- Apartment-style accommodations are available at the Bill & Joan Alfond Main Street Commons. Apartment accommodations include a full-sized bed, a private internal restroom, and a full kitchen. Building amenities include central air conditioning, a fitness center, free centralized laundry, and dedicated parking. The building is set within walking distance to various downtown shops and eateries.
