This type of appointment is not approved to work more than 999 hours per year for all positions combined. Should incumbents work more than a total of 999 hours in a year the appointment may not continue beyond one year of service.

The Facilities Department provides the physical environment, utilities, and facilities support services necessary to promote the educational and research activities of the university. Accountabilities
  • Uphold the University's landscaping standards by maintaining a manicured aesthetic, executing beautification projects, and being a responsible steward of landscape assets.
  • Regularly monitor and maintain the health of plant material, identifying and addressing any problematic landscape areas.
  • Perform edging, mulching, and removal of weeds, litter, and debris from tree rings and landscape beds to ensure a neat, well-kept appearance.
  • Plant and transplant new materials, and maintain landscape beds through proper edging and mulching techniques.
  • Trim, prune, brush cut, and remove plant material as needed to promote healthy growth and appearance.
  • Water plant material during periods of drought or to support initial establishment.
  • Select, order, and coordinate the delivery and placement of plant material to enhance campus landscape beds.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures and guidelines, including wearing required PPE and safely handling chemicals in compliance with University policies and supervisor instructions.
  • Promptly report any unsafe conditions or incidents to the supervisor and/or Environmental Health and Safety to ensure a safe working environment.
Requirements

Professional Experience/ Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of horticultural best management practices and landscape maintenance techniques, along with proficiency in plant identification, health and cultural requirements, and the ability to recognize weeds and invasive species.
You should be skilled in operating a variety of landscape tools and power equipment, such as pickup trucks, small tractors, mowers, string trimmers, and hand tools. Basic computer skills in Gmail, Microsoft Word, and Excel are also required and can be trained.
A proactive attitude, attention to detail, and the ability to take ownership of garden and landscape beds are essential. You must be able to problem-solve and prioritize tasks effectively, while demonstrating effective customer service, communication, and collaboration skills. The ability to work independently or within a team is important, along with maintaining a professional and respectful attitude in a diverse campus environment with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

A current valid driver's license, in accordance with University's Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Use Policy, is required.

Physical Requirements
  • Required to perform typical landscape maintenance tasks that require manual labor and/or operation of mechanical equipment.
  • Required to stand or kneel for long periods of time.
  • Required to lift/carry up 50 pounds, and be able to assist with lifting objects up to 100 pounds.
  • Required to work in various weather conditions.
  • NYSDOT physical may be required to operate Grounds vehicles.

This would be a great opportunity for students currently enrolled in a degree program in Horticulture, Landscape Design & Management, or a related field.
