We operate in four different domains (academic, career development, social skills, and independent living), but we engage in regular communication, problem-solving, brainstorming, and cross-curricular planning. We are dedicated to building an inclusive team that sustains a welcoming community for sharing our diverse perspectives and strengths.

College Living Experience, a post-secondary program for young adults (18 ) with Autism and/or other disabilities, is currently looking for an Independent Living Skills instructor and social coach. In this position, you will provide independent living skills instruction to students learning to live independently in their apartments. Perfect for those who enjoy fitness and healthy cooking, this position also includes small group work with students in those areas. The position also includes 1-1 sessions with students to focus on social goals both in the center and in the community. Topics might include initiating conversations, self-advocacy, and reciprocity. Experience with Autism and direct service preferred. These sessions are scheduled during regular business hours (though actual hours will be determined at hire to accommodate the needs of the new employee).

Responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating 1-1 sessions with students in their apartments to focus on independent living goals. This can include cleaning, cooking, laundry, creating organizational systems, refiling medications, and any other skills related to maintaining living spaces and structures as a young adult.
  • Leading fitness and healthy cooking groups.
  • Facilitating roommate conversations and meetings.
  • Teaching independent living skills to small groups of students
  • Mentoring students in 1-1 sessions to target social skills and goals in the center and in the community.
  • Models basic social conventions and promotes appropriate student interactions with peers, staff, and the community at large.
  • Helps student become aware of his/her own view of the world as it relates to others and helps the student to understand other people’s perspectives so that they can better traverse future and existing social contexts.
  • Assists the student in making social plans. Engages in appropriate activities with the student that foster greater understanding of social relationships and reciprocity. Examples include going to lunch, the mall, or facilitating engagement with other local community businesses.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferred
  • Working with people with Autism
  • Valid Driver License
  • US work Authorization
  • Driving: This position requires driving our center's new 14-passenger van. A valid driver's license is required, but special certifications are not needed.

Schedule: Day Shift, Monday-Friday. There is flexibility regarding schedule, but the ideal candidate will have 3-4 days of availability between Monday and Friday and between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm (a total of about 20 hours per week). Occasional social activities may be planned after business hours or on the weekend.

Expected hours: 20 – 22 per week

Job Type: Part-time Pay: $19.00 - $20.00 per hour
