Want to serve your community while growing personally and professionally? Join College Now’s AmeriCorps Ohio College & Career Guides Program! Our program is offered in partnership with the Ohio Commission on Service and Volunteerism (ServeOhio). AmeriCorps enables individuals to serve their community while earning a living allowance and an education award.
The goal of our program is to ensure that all Ohioans receive the information needed to prepare, access, and complete a postsecondary credential. AmeriCorps members provide workshops and advising on college and career exploration to 6th through 12th graders; provide support to 11th and 12th graders on postsecondary access and scholarship applications; and facilitate successful postsecondary transitions, persistence, and college affordability coaching with high school graduates.
AmeriCorps Ohio College & Career Guides is a corps of driven young professionals, whom students can relate to as they plan for their future.
Guides will serve in a full-time capacity (1,700 hours over 11 months) from August 4, 2025 to June 30, 2026. Half-term positions requiring 900 hours over 6 months may be available. We have programs in 6 locations: Cleveland, Columbus, Oberlin, Lorain County, Stark County, and Toledo.
General Responsibilities:
- Deliver the Lorain County Urban League’s Project Ready program to students in grades 9-12, utilizing the Urban League’s Project Ready curriculum, and deliver workshops and/or engage in one-to-one college and career conversations with students in grades 11 and 12.
- Assist students in making a post high school education plan
- Provide college and career information to students and families
- Help facilitate information sessions and programs for students and families
- Assist students with their college/career-bound process
- Assist Lorain County Urban League staff with college and career fairs, community events, and tabling
- Assist youth in the creation of service learning and community service projects
- Assist in the recruitment and retention of program youth
- Cultivate relationships with community partners to enhance various education programs
- Create and implement program lesson plans focusing on College Readiness, Social Development, and Career Readiness
- Organize and lead college and career visits
- Utilize Google products and other tools for effective program management, data entry, and documentation
- Document program activities on a daily, weekly, and quarterly basis to track progress, identify areas for improvement, and ensure program goals are met
- Schedule events for student and mentor engagement, including college tours, behind-the-business tours, fun outings, and other enrichment activities
- Participate in training and professional development workshops to enhance skills and stay informed about best practices in youth development and education
- Collaborate with the education team to address programmatic challenges and implement strategies for continuous improvement
Qualifications
Qualifications and Skill Requirements:
- Minimum of an associate degree required; a bachelor’s degree or senior-year college enrollment preferred.
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
- Ability to serve independently and be a contributing member of the AmeriCorps and host site team.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to serve in a fast-paced environment and multi-task effectively.
- Ability to commit to 1,700 hours of service in 11 months.
- Ability to serve for at least 8 hours in a row on any given weekday day.
- Ability to serve during minimal evenings and weekends as required.
- Ability to arrange own travel to and from service sites.
- Strong organization and task management skills and self-motivation.
- Proactive in service delivery.
- Maturity, enthusiasm, positivity and great “people skills.”
- Satisfactory result of BCI and FBI background check and sexual predator check.
- Strong commitment and passion for promoting access to and completion of higher education for everyone.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with students, mentors, and community partners.
- Experience with a variety of computer programs including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite and Google products.
Program benefits:
- Up to a $30,000 living allowance (please note, the living allowance is taxed).
- Upon successful completion of the full-time, 1,700-hour commitment, AmeriCorps Members will be eligible for an education award up to $7,395.
