The Director of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) at the College of The Albemarle (COA) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the BLET program. This includes planning, developing, implementing, and administering the program to ensure compliance with North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards (12 NCAC 09B.0202). The director is responsible for supervising instructors and maintaining direct supervision, direction and control over the performance of all persons to who any portion of the planning, development, presentation, or administration of a course has been delegated (12 NCAC 09B.0202 (7)). The director will also coordinate with regional law enforcement agencies to meet training needs and ensure program relevance.
The Director, Basic Law Enforcement Training Program receives supervision from the Division of Learning.Program Management
- Formalize and schedule the BLET curriculum in accordance with NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission standards (12 NCAC 09B.0202 (a)(1)).
- Ensure the program operates in compliance with college policies and NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission regulations.
- Develop and approve tests and other evaluative tools; maintain updated course syllabi and management guides.
- Recruit, interview, orient, and supervise instructors and Qualified Assistants (QAs); ensure instructors and QAs meet certification requirements.
- Coordinate instructor evaluations and provide feedback for improvement.
- Instruct as needed, but not to exceed 25% of the total 868-hour curriculum during any one delivery of a BLET course.
- Ensure students meet NC Administrative Code requirements for BLET admission.
- Advise students in the BLET program.
- Maintain the college code of student conduct and the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards (NC Administrative Code) and report issues to senior administration and NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Division as required by NC Administrative Code.
- Coordinate facilities and equipment for on-campus and off-campus instruction; ensure equipment security and maintenance.
- Develop and manage program budgets; assess and prioritize equipment purchases.
- Establish and manage an advisory committee for the program that includes regional stakeholders.
- Work with stakeholders such as regional law enforcement agencies to evaluate course content and develop new courses.
- Coordinate Continuing Education Law Enforcement Training and ensure financial viability of courses.
- Maintain required records and submit reports in a timely manner via the appropriate format to the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
- Develop, implement, evaluate, and report on program goals and outcomes and maintain current and accurate records for program review and regional accreditation.
Required:
- Current General Instructor certification by North Carolina Department of Justice, Training, and Standards Division
- School Director Certification or the ability to earn certification within 2 months of employment
- Valid driver's license
- High school diploma/Equivalency AND five years of practical experience as a criminal justice officer or as an administrator/specialist in a field directly related to the criminal justice training as a Commission certified instructor. OR Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field from a regionally accredited college or university AND four years of practical experience as a criminal justice officer or as an administrator/specialist in a field directly related to the criminal justice system. At least one year of the required four years' experience must have been while actively participating in criminal justice training as a Commission certified instructor.
- Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from a regionally accredited college or specialized training at the level required to meet SACS criteria for academic and professional preparation of assigned area of instruction.
- Specialized Instructor Certifications from Criminal Justice Training and Standards.
- Five years of relevant criminal justice experience.
- Two years of supervisory experience.
- Preference given to candidates who hold specialized instructor certification such as for PT and/or SCAT (CCT), and previous experience as a Qualified Assistant or School Director.
