The role of the Instructor/Program Coordinator, Electrical Systems Technology is responsible for delivering expert knowledge in their field and fostering a dynamic, student-centered learning environment. This role emphasizes engaging students in critical thinking and inspiring a passion for lifelong learning. Instruction may involve various delivery methods, including in-person, online, and hybrid formats, with teaching assignments potentially spanning multiple campuses to serve College of The Albemarle's seven-county service area. Additionally, the Instructor/Program Coordinator manages all aspects of the Electrical Systems Technology program and reports directly to the Dean of Business, Industry, and Applied Technologies.
  • Prepare, teach, and evaluate courses in all aspects of electrical installation and their applications in residential, commercial, and industrial installations, including trade math, blueprint reading, and electrical code.
  • Use various teaching strategies, learning styles, and delivery methods to support student success.
  • Remain current with industry technology, standards, and software.
  • Maintain accurate records of students' attendance and performance.
  • Review and revise, if necessary, course syllabi each semester.
  • Assist with textbook recommendations.
  • Complete a minimum of 8 hours of professional development annually.
  • Attend college and/or administrative meetings.
  • Maintain weekly student/office hours.
  • Serve as a student academic advisor for the program.
  • Perform advising duties such as connecting students with their career communities to explore career options, build supportive relationships, and confirm career goals, reviewing student educational plans, and registering students each semester.
  • Attend annual advising training as required.
  • Participate in the marketing and recruitment of students for the program.
  • Provide information, data, and documentation for annual program reviews.
  • Implement college goals as related to the instructional area.
  • Participate in the hiring of all part-time faculty utilized by the program.
  • Assist the Academic Dean with the orientation, mentoring, and evaluation of all program faculty.
  • Communicate regularly (formally and informally) with the Academic Dean.
  • Ensure program nominations for student awards are submitted to the Academic Dean.
  • Maintain curriculum standards for all courses related to the program at all college sites (curriculum and short-term training).
  • Participate and make recommendations in the development of new course and program applications in conjunction with the Academic Dean.
  • Review course evaluations performed by the students within the program and uses the results to drive program goals and outcomes.
  • Ensure that textbook orders are placed in a timely manner for the program.
  • Ensure that daily program courses are met in the event of a part-time faculty member's illness, leave of absence, professional development activities, etc.
  • Assist the Academic Dean with the development of the program course schedule in accordance with the college's procedure and timeline.
  • Monitor enrollment in classes during the registration period and make recommendations to the Academic Dean on the addition or removal of class sections based on student demand related to the program.
  • Ensure the existence of a viable Advisory Committee for the program. Hold a meeting of the Advisory Committee at least once a year and submit the meeting minutes to the office of the Vice President of Learning.
  • Assess, prioritize, and order equipment for the program and monitor the security of the program's equipment.
  • Work with the Academic Dean to develop an annual program budget as related to the program's needs in the areas of personnel, supplies, travel, and equipment requests. Oversee requests for,  as well as the receipt of, purchased items within the program.
  • Monitor budget(s) within  the program for the academic year.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and report on program goals: Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), Unit Action Plan (UAP), etc.
  • Interact with businesses, high schools, and other local partners to promote the program and asses their need for related programming.
  • Serve on college and ad hoc committees as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required:
  • Electrical training, experience, and demonstrated knowledge at the level required to meet accreditation criteria for academic and professional preparation of assigned area of instruction.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in the electrical field.
Desired:
  • Diploma, Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Systems Technology or related area from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Five years electrical experience.
  • Limited, Intermediate, or Unlimited License from a state board of electrical contractors.
  • Teaching experience at the high school or post-secondary level.
Knowledge of:
  • National Electric Code and Electrical Computations.
  • The use of computers and software availability.
  • Knowledge/certifications in Solar/PV and/or Wind Energy
  • PLC's, Electronic Controls, and Electrical Machine Controls.
Skills:
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Experience with teaching multiple modalities (seated, hybrid, online).
  • Bilingual
Ability to:
  • Teach day and evening teaching assignments.
  • Teach at multiple college locations.
