DISABLED STUDENT PROGRAMS SERVICES (DSPS) COUNSELOR

FIRST REVIEW JANUARY 3, 2025 - OPEN UNTIL FILLED

STARTING SALARY RANGE : $71,365 to 96,238

FULL SALARY RANGE : $71,365 to $130,597

195-DAY CONTRACT / FULL-TIME TENURE TRACK

Under the supervision of the Vice President of Student Services and with direction from the Student Access Services (SAS) Director, the counselor will provide direct academic, career, and personal counseling services to students in the SAS program. The Counselor works with a minimum of supervision to perform the counseling functions.

This is a full-time faculty position with a 195-day contract. The position is being advertised as a full-time tenure track position. The successful candidate will be trained and allowed to gain the required time to become minimally qualified to become the Counselor of SAS.

The College is seeking applications from individuals who have the desired characteristics and skills necessary to provide exemplary service to students. Candidates must have one of the master's degrees in the minimum qualifications but may still qualify for the position if they do not meet the required time of two years full-time experience, or the equivalent in one or more of the following :

  • Counseling for students with disabilities; or
  • Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for person with disabilities, or the equivalent

Key Duties & Responsibilities

SAS Counselor

  • Provide academic, career, and personal counseling services to students within SAS
  • Determine reasonable academic accommodations for students, in consultation with the SAS Director
  • Interpret assessment scores and implement course placement processes using multiple measures
  • Prepare and update educational plans
  • In response to data, assist in development of specialized programs, services and curriculum
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the college's Student Equity and Achievement (SEA), Guided Pathways, and other student success efforts
  • Prepare and maintain academic advising materials
  • Coordinate and / or provide career services for students
  • Assist as needed with articulation, student outreach, and recruitment activities
  • Participate in college governance by serving on college committees; participate in professional development, including flex obligations; assist with student and other educational activities in accordance with college policies; establish and maintain effective work relationships
  • If needed, the counselor may be reassigned to a portion of time as Learning Disability Specialist if the selected candidate meets minimum qualifications.
  • Learning Disability Specialist

  • Provide assessment services to students with possible learning disabilities.
  • Evaluate disability verification documents, including outside testing records, to determine eligibility
  • Administer diagnostic testing in order to determine eligibility for learning disability services in accordance with the CA Community Colleges Learning Disabilities Eligibility and Services Model; meet with students to discuss their diagnostic result and recommended academic adjustment, accommodations, and any academic concerns; prepare and maintain records for each student
  • Serve as a liaison between student and appropriate campus and community resources; provide training to faculty and staff concerning laws and regulations regarding students with disabilities, confidentiality issues, and strategies for assisting students with disabilities
  • If needed, the counselor may be reassigned to teach in the classroom with assigned duties as outlined below :
  • Teach guidance and college success courses as assigned
  • Develop and present career and / or college success related workshops
  • Classroom Duties : Provide instruction that may include lecture and laboratory classes in the discipline in accordance with established COS approved
  • curriculum and course outlines; inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures, attendance and participation requirements in a
  • course syllabus; effectively teach and communicate with students of diverse backgrounds.
  • Interaction with students out of class : Advise students on academic and career matters; assist in outreach and articulation with high schools, four-year
  • colleges and universities? post and maintain adequate and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy.
  • Other Duties : Professional and curriculum development- Remain current in field and curriculum and instructional methods, develop, maintain and evaluate curriculum including development and assessment of student learning outcomes; select textbooks; evaluate course materials; interact with faculty and staff in other areas of instruction and participate in the development of instructional methods, technology and materials; work with peers in
  • higher education, and where appropriate, business and industry to maintain currency of instructional programs.
  • Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic and student records, and submit them according to published guidelines, prepare and grade class assignments and evaluations according to course syllabus.
  • Coordinate SAS Peer Mentoring Program, including training of peer mentors.
  • Knowledge and Skills :

  • Thorough understanding of disability compliance laws and regulations
  • Familiarity with assistive and adaptive technology
  • In depth understanding of the needs of students with disabilities; current trends in higher education for students with disabilities
  • Cultural competency; ability to develop and implement specialized counseling approaches, programs, and services for low-income and educationally disadvantaged students and students with disabilities
  • Effective communication - written and oral
  • Planning, coordinating, implementing, and managing a program or service area
  • Knowledge of budget development and management
  • Skill in using a variety of computer software programs to prepare correspondence, schedule meetings, review student and financial records, and report data
  • Knowledge of vocational fields and career trends
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in rehabilitation counseling

    Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage family and child counseling, or a Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level coursework related to people with disabilities, or completion of 6 semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of full time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following :

  • Counseling for students with disabilities; or
  • Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for person with disabilities, or the equivalent
  • Desired Qualifications :

  • Ability to communicate with hearing impaired students
  • Knowledge of assessment exams and accommodation protocol
  • Knowledge of Title 5 and other governmental regulations as they apply to students with disabilities
  • Experience with developing and tracking service area outcomes, accreditation, and strategic planning processes
  • Knowledge of California Community College programs and initiatives (Guided Pathways, Student Equity and Achievement Plan, AB 705, etc.)
  • Knowledge of and experience with AIM software
  • Knowledge of and experience with university articulation agreements, transfer requirements, enrollment trends, requirements for Associate degrees and Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT), and general education patterns in secondary and post-secondary education
  • Learning Disability Specialist certification or ability to obtain the certification.
  • Knowledge and experience with NCAA transfer requirements and working with student athletes transferring from a California Community College to another college / university

    Salary and Benefits :

  • The annual salary range for the base assignment of a 195 day contract is : $71,365 to $130,597 . Additional compensation available with extended hours. Starting placement on the District salary schedule is based upon years of experience and number units completed beyond the Master's degree. New academic employees may receive credit for no more than 5 years of job-related experience.
  • Starting salary range is : $71,365 to $96,238

  • Faculty members with an earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution receive an additional $2,000 annual stipend.

  • The employee participates in CalSTRS through District and employee contributions.
  • Selection Process :

    After the preliminary screening, selected candidates will be invited for an initial interview with the Search Committee. First level interviews may be in person or by Zoom. Candidates to be interviewed will be selected from applicants who most closely meet the minimum and desired qualifications. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview. The Search Committee will recommend a slate of finalists to the Vice President of Student Services for a final interview.

    The District reserves the right to re-advertise the position or to delay indefinitely filling of the position if it is deemed that applicants for the position do not constitute an adequate applicant pool or if funding is not available.

    Conditions of Employment :

    Employees must satisfy all the pre-employment requirements prior to appointment that include, but are not limited to, tuberculosis clearance (EC 87408.6), fingerprint processing, and verification of their legal right to work in the United States. A pre-employment physical examination may be required.
