Established in 1957, College of the Siskiyous is one of 113 publicly funded California community colleges. Classes began September 10, 1959 with 67 students and only three campus buildings. Since that humble beginning, College of the Siskiyous (COS) has greatly expanded its programs, services, and facilities. COS is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The Fire/Emergency Response Technology Program is approved as an accredited regional academy for the State Fire Marshal's Office. The Paramedic/Emergency Medical Technician, Licensed Vocational Nursing and Registered Nursing Programs are accredited by their respective state agencies.
COS is located at the base of majestic Mount Shasta (elevation 14,162 feet) in far northern California. Its 250-acre primary campus is centered in the historic lumber town of Weed, named after its founder Abner Weed, and is easily accessible from Interstate 5 and Highway 97. The primary campus offers numerous associate degree and certificate programs in the arts, athletics, humanities, sciences, mathematics as well as career and technical programs in business/computer science, EMS-Paramedic, Fire, and Welding, to name but a few. Students have access to academic counseling, academic assessment, library services and resources, career counseling, personal counseling, financial aid assistance, Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS), Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), Student Support Services (SSS), textbook sales and buy backs, and tutoring services. COS is also one of only eleven community colleges in California to offer students on-campus student housing.
In addition to its primary campus, COS operates a smaller campus in Yreka, 30 miles north of Weed, which is the site of the Rural Health Sciences Institute (RHSI) and the Technology Training Center. In Yreka, a variety of transfer, general education, vocational, continuing education, distance education, and lifelong learning classes are available. Similar to the primary campus, the Yreka campus provides complete registration and advising services. Yreka Campus facilities also include a computer lab with full Internet access, general purpose classrooms, multiple classrooms with videoconferencing capabilities, the Law Enforcement Training Center with a firearms training simulator classroom, fully-equipped physical education room, and the Rural Health Scien Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in rehabilitation counseling
OR
• Master’s degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage family and child counseling, or a Bachelor’s degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level coursework related to people with disabilities, or completion of 6 semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of full time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:
1. Counseling for students with disabilities; or
2. Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for person with disabilities, or the equivalent
Key Duties & Responsibilities
SAS Counselor
- Provide academic, career, and personal counseling services to students within SAS
- Determine reasonable academic accommodations for students, in consultation with the SAS Director
- Interpret assessment scores and implement course placement processes using multiple measures
- Prepare and update educational plans
- In response to data, assist in development of specialized programs, services and curriculum
- Assist with the development and implementation of the college’s Student Equity and Achievement (SEA), Guided Pathways, and other student success efforts
- Prepare and maintain academic advising materials
- Coordinate and/or provide career services for students
- Assist as needed with articulation, student outreach, and recruitment activities
- Participate in college governance by serving on college committees? participate in professional development, including flex obligations? assist with student and other educational activities in accordance with college policies? establish and maintain effective work relationships
*If needed, the counselor may be reassigned to a portion of time as Learning Disability Specialist if the selected candidate meets minimum qualifications.
Learning Disability Specialist
Provide assessment services to students with possible learning disabilities.
Evaluate disability verification documents, including outside testing records, to determine eligibility
Administer diagnostic testing in order to determine eligibility for learning disability services in accordance with the CA Community Colleges Learning Disabilities Eligibility and Services Model; meet with students to discuss their diagnostic result and recommended academic adjustment, accommodations, and any academic concerns; prepare and maintain records for each student
Serve as a liaison between student and appropriate campus and community resources; provide training to faculty and staff concerning laws and regulations regarding students with disabilities, confidentiality issues, and strategies for assisting students with disabilities
*If needed, the counselor may be reassigned to teach in the classroom with assigned duties as outlined below:
- Teach guidance and college success courses as assigned
- Develop and present career and/or college success related workshops
- Classroom Duties: Provide instruction that may include lecture and laboratory classes in the discipline in accordance with established COS approved curriculum and course outlines? inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures, attendance and participation requirements in acourse syllabus? effectively teach and communicate with students of diverse backgrounds.
- Interaction with students out of class: Advise students on academic and career matters? assist in outreach and articulation with high schools, four-ye colleges and universities? post and maintain adequate and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy.
- Other Duties: Professional and curriculum development- Remain current in field and curriculum and instructional methods? develop, maintain and evaluate curriculum including development and assessment of student learning outcomes? select textbooks? evaluate course materials? interact with faculty and staff in other areas of instruction and participate in the development of instructional methods, technology and materials? work with peers higher education, and where appropriate, business and industry to maintain currency of instructional programs.
- Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic and student records, and submit them according to published guidelines? prepare and grade class assignments and evaluations according to course syllabus.
- Coordinate SAS Peer Mentoring Program, including training of peer mentors.
