Job Duties

Richard Bland College (RBC) is a two-year, residential, liberal arts transfer institution that focuses on preparing students for transfer to highly ranked colleges and universities. The College is a hidden gem located outside the Tri-Cities region—and its rural setting featuring 750 acres of wetlands, bucolic forest, and the state’s oldest and largest pecan grove.

Richard Bland College of William & Mary is currently seeking an exceptional Learner Mentor/Guided Pathway Specialist who is an enthusiastic and caring professional that will manage the academic trajectory of students at RBC. The primary role of this position is to support students by helping them explore educational and career goals proactively. This position will prepare students for transfer and/or the workforce by placing students on (and guiding them through) a flexible academic pathway as well as tracking their academic progression and completion towards a degree. Learner Mentor/Guided Pathway Specialists also engage in basic financial aid and career planning conversations with students, including matching student career interest to courses/programs of study and being mindful of debt and default management concerns. They also cooperate and collaborate extensively with faculty and other student service departments at RBC in order to increase retention.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited the following:

  • Assess the academic needs and career goals of new and continuing students
  • Assist new and continuing students in both choosing and maintaining satisfactory performance in a meta-major and subsequent pathway
  • Track a student’s academic pathway to a potential transfer school and major as early as possible in the learner journey
  • Support the creation and launch of creative registration campaigns with other student service offices to drive early registration for new and continuing students
  • Maintain knowledge of the curricula for RBC degrees, certificates, and other credentials relevant to transferring to Virginia four-year institutions as well as for career preparation
  • Develop and pilot the GPS@RBC program with faculty to foster student success and retention
  • Collaborate with faculty and the Office of Residence Life to develop intentional interventions along each student’s pathway that encourage growth and sustain commitment to completing a degree at RBC
  • Initiate and organize programs to engage RBC students regarding academics, transfer and career readiness
  • Provide students proactive academic advising, career advising, and success coaching
  • Maintain an up-to-date academic advising reference file containing current program area, College and transfer institutional partner materials pertinent to advising
  • Work to ensure both online and print advising and transfer pathway advising materials are up-to date, accurate, and helpful to students
  • Collaborate with Academics to remain knowledgeable on curriculum changes in order to effectively adjust student schedules in the interest of student success
  • Monitor learning systems including Canvas and Dropout Detective and intervene where appropriate with face-to-face meetings and follow-up including documentation
  • Raise concerns and makes recommendations for continual improvement of policies, procedures, and systems in order to better serve RBC students
  • Analyze and evaluate the current process flows with the intent of advancing efficiencies, utilizing technology and improving service levels to students
  • Assist with Open House, Orientation, Welcome Week, Commencement and other college events as needed
  • Support and provide input on college-wide strategies for increasing student retention to meet the goals outlined in the RBC strategic plan
  • Serve as a proctor in the Test Center as needed
  • Facilitate an expedient placement testing process


Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university, with course work in counseling, social work, higher education or another related field
  • Demonstrated experience in a secondary or higher education setting as a guidance counselor, student advisor or similar position
  • Customer service experience in a secondary or higher education setting
  • Experience in quality improvement and/or ongoing professional development of students


Additional Considerations

  • Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, student development/affairs, social work, enrollment management, or related field
  • Experience working with at least one of the following: First Year Experience, Academic Advising, Writing/Tutoring Centers, Orientation, ADA (Americans with Disabilities), Career Advising Banner experience
  • Experience with serving students from underserved and diverse populations with an emphasis on eliminating equity gaps
  • Experience with Banner
