Summary:
The Head Football Coach is responsible for all phases of the NCAA D-III football program in accordance and compliance with NCAA, North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) and The College of Wooster policies and regulations. Leadership and management of the football program includes all aspects of team development and training of student-athletes, retention, and total organization and administration of the program. The head coach will also have a teaching assignment.
Essential Departmental Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plans, develops, and directs all team training and conditioning activities, practice and competition plans.
- Develops competition schedule at a level that will enhance the football program’s position of competitive leadership in the North Coast Athletic Conference and the NCAA Division III.
- Prepares and implements scouting reports, game film, film breakdown, and film exchange.
- Collaborates with athletic trainers to maintain student-athlete welfare.
- Participates actively in NCAC//NCAA/AFCA governance for football.
- Manages all administrative operations associated with the program including budget management, coordinating team travel, room reservations, and meals, and working with the purchasing manager to order equipment and supplies.
- Works with the Office of Admissions to recruit academically and athletically strong applicants for the selective and competitive applicant pool.
- Partners with Student Affairs and the Academic Resource Center to support student retention efforts.
- Collaborates with the Office of Athletic Communications to strengthen the program’s social media presence.
- Engages with the Office of Advancement to foster relationships with parents and alumni, emphasizing support and fundraising initiatives.
- Teaches a course in the college’s Physical Education curriculum.
- Creates a welcoming environment emphasizing inclusion and the development of diverse identities, beliefs, and voices.
- Engages team members in service activities both on campus and in the surrounding community.
- Supervises assistant coach(es) in accordance with the College / Department policies and applicable laws; may also have oversight of student employees.
- Serves as an active member of the athletic department’s team, responsible for providing leadership, goals, and program implementation to our nearly 1800 undergraduate students.
- Leads and assists with designated departmental, divisional, and/or College committees, initiatives and processes.
- Builds collaborative relationships with student affairs colleagues, faculty, and campus partners to achieve shared goals.
- Establishes meaningful connections with students, staff, and faculty through visibility and engagement on campus.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Five to seven years’ related experience highlighting a successful record of coaching and recruiting at the intercollegiate level; collegiate head coaching experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of NCAA regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment and retention of student-athletes.
- The ability to obtain College driver certification is preferred.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification is required (and can be completed after hire).

Work Environment:
- Coaches are required to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, or holidays.
- Travel for athletic contests, recruiting, coaches meetings and convention/caucus attendance is required.
- Some heavy lifting / moving equipment is required.
- While performing the duties of this job, the Assistant Coach regularly travels in outside weather conditions and is exposed to wet or humid conditions, extreme temperatures, dirt, and dust.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
