Varsity Girls Soccer Coach - Fall 2025 Season
The Varsity Head Coach is responsible for helping each student-athlete achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for discipline and sportsmanship, and an enhanced sense of self-esteem. The Varsity Head Coach reports directly to the Athletic Director.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative Responsibilities
- Collaborates with the Athletic Director on all matters related to the organization, administration, and philosophy of the sport.
- Serves as a leader within the community program.
- Oversees the high school program for the sport.
- Adheres to the MIAA Coaches Guidebook and BPS Coaches Handbook; acts as a positive role model both on and off the field/court.
- Coaches individual participants to develop the skills necessary for excellence in the sport.
- Maintains knowledge of MIAA rules, event procedures, coaching techniques, and other aspects of the sport.
- Recommends teams for scheduling to the Athletic Director.
- Coordinates with the Athletic Director to schedule BPS facility use.
- Secures Athletic Director approval before scheduling off-campus activities in non-school facilities.
- Collaborates with coaches and/or the Athletic Director to plan transportation and ensure appropriate supervision at away contests, in compliance with district travel policies and guidelines.
Supervisory Duties
- Assists the Athletic Director in recruiting and hiring coaching staff.
- Evaluates all assistant, subvarsity, and volunteer coaches.
- Assigns duties to coaching staff.
Record-Keeping Responsibilities
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date team and program rosters and submits copies to the Athletic Office.
- Works closely with the Athletic Director to manage the sport's finances, preparing and submitting an annual budget; follows BPS school committee policies on funding and financial transactions.
- Develops and supervises fundraising efforts for teams under his/her direction.
- Communicates consistently and positively with the school and media to inform parents and the community about the sport.
- Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results throughout the season.
- Arranges for team awards presentations through the Athletic Office.
- Records, submits, and maintains necessary MIAA and BPS paperwork.
- Submits all grant applications with the approval of the superintendent, special programs principal, and Athletic Director.
Athletic Behavior/Eligibility Responsibilities
- Enforces all MIAA rules related to the sport.
- Models and enforces discipline, sportsmanship, and a positive team environment at all times.
- Establishes and enforces penalties for breaches of discipline and sportsmanship.
- Ensures a bullying- and hazing-free environment.
- Establishes performance criteria for student-athletes' participation in interscholastic competition.
- Checks athlete eligibility with the Athletic Office.
- Establishes written program expectations.
- Partners with faculty to ensure student-athletes are academically engaged and successful.
Injury/Safety
- Cooperates with the Athletic Director to ensure that participants complete their physical examination and Baseline concussion testing before practicing or receiving equipment.
- Oversees the safety of the facility or area where the sport is conducted during practice and events.
- Enforces rules regarding player conditioning and health and safety.
- Reports injuries to the athletic trainer and submits incident reports to both the trainer and Athletic Office.
- Exercises caution when handling injuries, ensuring athletes receive appropriate medical care.
- Ensures injured athletes have signed approval from a doctor and parent before returning to activities.
- Provides supervision of athletes until they leave the building or event site.
- Ensures that all doors, windows, and gates are secured after events.
Team Activities
- Plans practice sessions, competitions, and out-of-season conditioning programs.
- Maintains a positive environment, free from hazing, harassment, bullying, or intimidating behavior.
- Organizes special events such as assemblies, Senior/Parent Night, team meals, and the awards banquet.
Other Duties
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred or Required
- Valid teaching certificate and a bachelor’s degree preferred.
- First Aid and CPR certification required.
- MIAA Coaches Education Certification Level 1 or 2 required for new Varsity Head Coaches (effective 2016-2017).
- Experience in teaching, coaching, or sports medicine preferred.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated success in coaching or athletic leadership.
- Sport-specific certifications preferred.
- Playing experience preferred.
