Colonial Welding LLC is a small business in Metal Fabrication, Welding , and Engineering in Norfolk, VA. We provide services to the shipyard, Crowder Construction, J Henry Holland, Norfolk & Southern, SOCOM, and various other companies in the Tidewater area and beyond. We have been in business since 1995 and we are well established and known in this area for our work ethic, quality craftsmanship, design and fabrication skills.

Our facility is one of the largest and most well equipped in the area, with over 20,000 square feet under one roof. We have four overhead cranes in our shop and we maintain state-of-the-art fabricating equipment and machinery that enables us to fabricate a variety of metals from 28 gauge to 4" thick plate.

Colonial Welding LLC is looking for a Fabricator Mechanic to join our team in Norfolk, VA.

The ideal candidate will have:

Job Requirements:

A shop fabricator/Mechanic is experienced with Laying out, positioning, aligning, and fitting parts of structural metal products and welding, rolling, cutting, forming and cleaning up to finish out the product. Possesses advanced knowledge of most all shop fabrication equipment: Press brake, Plate rollers, Pipe rollers, CNC laser, Water Jet, plasma cutters, etc.

Essential Functions:

1. Positions, aligns, fits, and welds parts to form complete units or sub-units, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.

2. Verifies conformance of work-pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes

3. Tack-welds fitted parts together.

4. Lays out and examines metal stock or work-pieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.

5. Aligns and fits parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.

6. Locates and marks work-piece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications.

7. Positions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting.

8. Studies engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences.

9. Moves parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes.

10. Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Measures, templates, cuts, and grinds components for foundations and other structural members Efficient use of material to prevent waste.

2. Advanced use of cutting equipment (Plasma Cutter and Oxy/Fuel Torch).

3. Advanced reading, and interpreting of blueprints

(Successful identification of material types, parts, references, applicable views/details).

4. Advanced use of temporary attachments.

5. Advanced use of forming equipment (Brakes, Rollers)

6. Advanced understanding of weld joint design (full and partial penetration welds, chamfers, and bevels).

7. Advanced skill in the installation and removal of fasteners and rivets

8. Correctly identifies base material types and thicknesses.

9. Advanced level tack welder in common positions (overhead, vertical, horizontal)

10. Intermediate tack welding in uncommon/ limited access positions (mirror, confined, heavy interference's).

11. Expert with an Advanced understanding of fitting operations (coping, straightening, carbon arcing).

12. Advanced knowledge of Erect and Set principles (identification/use of extra material, set to lines, etc.).

13. Complete understanding of material fabrication.

14. Recognizes tooling needs (Which tool to use for which application).

15. Able to solve job issues without the need for Supervisory approval.

16. Ability to read fit up/alignments measuring devices (rulers/tape, levels, bobs, squares, etc.)

17. Advanced use of power tools (grinders, reciprocating saws, drills etc.)

18. Advanced use of hand tools (hammers, punches, clamps, etc.)

19. Knowledge of power tool safety, (correctly identifying kick direction and pinch points)

20. Use of positioning equipment (dogs/wedges, rams, saddles)

21. Knowledge of shipbuilding standards (009-12, W1689)

22. Knowledge of inspection standards (009-25, 009-06)

23. Knowledge of inspection standards AISC and AWS.

24. Adheres to fire safety principles.

25. Knowledge of industry safety standards/training.

26. Adheres to industry safety standards.

27. Requires occasional supervision to accomplish work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and seek help with weights over 50 pounds.

2. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

This position working in a shop or yard is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles, smoke, extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high, precarious places.

You will be required to wear appropriate PPE including, but not limited to:

· Ear plugs or attenuator

· Safety shoes

· Dust mask or respirator

· Gloves

Pay: $22.00 - $30.00 per hour
