Shipyard Superintendent I - Commercial and Government Ship Repair

Purpose:
Colonna’s Shipyard West, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a seasoned Shipyard Superintendent I with expertise in both commercial and government ship repair, along with the capability to manage shipboard repair projects effectively.
The Shipyard Superintendent I - Commercial and Government Ship Repair will serve as a key leader in our shipyard operations, overseeing and managing ship repair projects for both commercial and government vessels. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of industry regulations, technical expertise in ship repair processes, and exceptional project management skills to ensure the successful execution of projects on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This position holds oversight of the project and all contractual deliverables.
The position is located onsite in Chula Vista, CA and may require hours beyond a standard work week to support business operations, as needed. Position may require limited travel and requires you to obtain and maintain access to government installations.
Job Description:
Project Management:
  • Lead and manage ship repair projects for both commercial and government clients, from planning through execution to completion.
  • Develop detailed project plans, schedules, and resource allocation strategies to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of project objectives.
  • Manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, subcontractors, and vendors to execute project activities in accordance with client requirements and industry standards.
  • Approve time charges and material expenditures, within their spending limit, unless they specifically delegate these duties to the assigned Supervisors.
  • Write/modify subcontract purchase orders. Verify subcontract purchase order values are kept current and that increases and decreases are processed quickly so that job cost can be determined.
Commercial and Government Contract Compliance:
  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations, specifications, and regulatory requirements for both commercial and government ship repair projects.
  • Adhere to relevant regulations and guidelines, such as those from regulatory bodies and classification societies, to ensure adherence throughout project execution.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and records to demonstrate compliance and facilitate audits as required.
  • Compare labor expenditures against the spending plan and report any variation with explanation.
Shipboard Repair Management:
  • Manage shipboard repair projects, including planning and coordination of repairs, logistics, and safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with vessel owners, operators, and onboard personnel to schedule repairs, minimize downtime, and ensure minimal disruption to vessel operations.
  • Oversee the deployment of repair teams, equipment, and materials to the vessel site, ensuring timely and efficient completion of repairs.
  • Approve all requests for material and rental equipment within the spending limit.
  • Represent the company in discussions with the customer regarding schedule and support the contract group in developing support for “schedule impact” on change orders when warranted.
Quality Assurance and Safety Compliance:
  • Implement and enforce quality assurance measures to uphold the highest standards of workmanship and compliance with specifications.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits to assess the quality of repairs and ensure adherence to safety protocols and regulatory standards.
  • Address any non-conformities or safety issues promptly, implementing corrective actions as necessary to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of personnel and vessels.
Estimation:
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for ship repair projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
  • Participate in bid reviews, contract negotiations, and change order management.
  • Track and report on project budgets, costs, and profitability throughout the project lifecycle.
Qualifications:
  • Must have at least 8 years of experience in shipyard operations, with a focus on commercial and/or government ship repair projects.
  • Must have experience working government ship repair projects.
  • Must have a proven track record of successfully managing complex ship repair projects, including shipboard repairs, within budget and schedule constraints.
  • Must have strong technical knowledge of ship repair processes, industry regulations, and safety standards.
  • Must have excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Must have strong communication skills both written and oral with the ability to act as a spokesperson.
  • Must have experience with Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, and Project.
  • Must have experience in dry docks and vessel inspections.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain access to government installations.
Security Requirements:
  • Must be able to access government facilities and be DBIDS eligible.
  • Position requires you to obtain and maintain a DBIDS.
  • Position requires US Citizenship.
Travel Requirements:
  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.

Salary Range: $100,000 - $115,000
Determination of base salary considers various factors, including but not limited to scope of responsibility, candidate’s relative and specific experience, education level, key skills, as well as other business considerations. The company also provides a variety of benefits to support employees’ best health and wellness. Additionally, the company offers a 401k retirement program with match, paid holidays, and competitive paid time off (PTO).

Salary : $100,000 - $115,000
