Position Overview
The primary duties of the Field Technician are to load and unload materials from trucks and perform installation and service work as required. Field Technicians will travel throughout the city with an experienced Traffic Control Supervisor who will teach you how to properly lift, load, and unload traffic control devices on and off trucks. You will learn how to direct traffic through job sites, set up lane closures, operate arrow boards and message boards as well as how to work safely in and around various types of work zones. This is the foundational position in the company and will be a springboard for future advancement. The primary duty of the flagger is to control the movement of traffic (vehicle, pedestrian, & bicycle) through construction projects in a safe manner. Flaggers will direct the movement of traffic on-site using a paddle, hand, and flag signals. The flagger warns construction/utility workers of dangerous situations that may arise in the work zone, such as a vehicle failing to heed signals, to prevent accidents and injury to workers. The flagger informs drivers of detour routes through work sites. While laboring. Complete all internal paperwork.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Arrive at the work site on time wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), e.g., hard hats, safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, masks, and earplugs as required, and when applicable, a respirator.
- Follow all safety rules and regulations of the Company and particularly the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
- Responsible for safe lifting, loading, and unloading of equipment to and from trucks
- Ability to drive a 1-2-ton truck.
- Hauling material to and from the job site.
- Assist with the removal of existing striping with the use of hand grinders.
- Assist with the layout, cut, and installation of tape to define crosswalks, lane lines, etc.
- Use of various types of equipment such as propane torches, walk-behind hand liners, ride-on grooving machines, and large striping trucks.
- Assist with the installation of various types of road markings using various types of equipment and machines.
- Lift, carry, and stack materials.
- Assist with the installation of permanent traffic signs of various sizes.
- Direct traffic safely around work zones using stop/slow paddles and hand signals by flagging motorists away from worker activities, moving equipment, oncoming traffic, etc.
- Assist with setting up and taking down work zones that will protect workers and the traveling public.
- Deploy and set up arrow boards and message boards for work zones.
- Maintain accurate and timely Pre-Trip and Post Trip Inspection paperwork.
- Conduct themselves in a manner that promotes a professional and respectful atmosphere and ensures that the service encounter with the customer is an exceptional experience.
- Clean, sweep, and organize yards, shops, and inventory supplies and equipment.
- Wash and clean equipment.
- Keep company vehicles clean and orderly, informing management of any safety concerns or vehicle problems
- Work hours can be dependent on the weather.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
- Flagging when assigned.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to read maps and knowledge of local streets.

- A strong knowledge of the traffic control/construction industry is a major plus.
- Flexibility to work various schedules and stay late, when necessary, with little or no notice. Able to work mid and night shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Willing to travel as needed.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements
- Work is performed outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions / varying temperatures,., exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, dry, and/or windy conditions.
- General Lift/Carry Expectations: Must be able to up to 70 lbs. regularly. Constant lifting/carrying of material used to complete the job.
- Standing: Constant standing throughout the shift. The position may require standing for periods greater than two hours at a time, for a total of greater than eight hours.
- Walking: Constant walking throughout the shift to complete the worksite project.
- Sitting: Occasional sitting for brief periods in vehicles when moving from one location to another.
- Reaching: Constant reaching to load and unload material and equipment. Included constant overhead reaching.
- Stooping/Bending/Kneeling: Constant stooping/bending/kneeling when putting down and picking up material and equipment.
- Twisting: Frequent twisting of the body from side to side.
- Grasping: Constant grasping handles, brooms, shovels, roller knaps.
- Pushing/Pulling: Frequent pushing and pulling of various work equipment.
- Working safely requires quick/accurate hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to work at heights of 7-25 ft.
Work Settings/Description of Environmental Hazards Encountered
- Highways, city, and county roads. Working around moving vehicles on roadways and around moving heavy equipment at road construction sites.
Travel
- Daily travel to and from the worksite, some overnight travel may be necessary.
Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License and clean MVR **Must maintain a valid driver’s license during entire employment**.
- Pass pre-employment, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug screens.
- Satisfactory results of a pre-employment background check.
- Hold/obtain DOT medical card.
- Forklift certification and Flagger certification may be required or able to obtain.
