Engineer-in-Training I (Design / Construction) - Colorado Springs

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.
 

About the Position:
While working along side of professional engineers this position designs projects or programs and performs inspection for highway construction projects, this typically includes utilization of the agencies practices and methodologies. This position builds upon basic engineering theories, concepts, principles, will attain their Engineer Intern registration and progresses toward a professional engineer license. 

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Construction Inspection and Oversight

  • Documents and approves progress and final contract payments due for work completed and accepted by reviewing pay documentation prepared by staff and by overseeing and checking cumulative payment reports and authorizations compiled by computer programs. 
  • Conducts inspections of construction project work including field observation, testing of materials in accordance with established Colorado and industry testing procedures, and measuring and documenting work and quantities. 
  • Completing and maintaining WAQTC, CAPA, and ACI materials testing certifications in order to test materials delivered to CDOT managed construction projects.
Project Design and Development
  • Learn to prepare and design engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates for roadway construction projects. 
  • Assure quality and consistency of project design plans and procedures.
  • Use engineering practices and calculation methods that meet CDOT and AASHTO guidelines. 
  • Develop practical applications of professional engineering processes, theories, laws, principles, and techniques related to highway engineering.
Project Management
  • Works with project managers on design and construction projects to gain experience in all aspects of contract and project administration. 
  • Attend review meetings to ensure that plan, design, and construction transportation projects comply with engineering and regulatory guidelines. 
  • Identify engineering and project objectives, anticipated complex features, problems, and possible solutions. 
  • Maintains official project records by receiving, reviewing, and assuring the proper logging, distribution, and filing of all related documents. 
Consultant Management
  • Administers contracts or monitors consultant’s management of transportation projects with oversight from the Resident Engineer.  
  • Develops scope of services and initiation of task order in coordination with Resident Engineer and Region 2 Business Office’s practice guidelines. 
  • Monitors and approves consultant charges and recommend payment for completed work. 
  • Negotiates and recommends approval of task orders or supplemental contracts required for consultant services. 
  • Participates on consultant selection panels when requested by the Resident Engineer.  
  • Coordinates clearances, construction inspections, and plan reviews.
  • Reviews contract documents delivered by consultants and learns to compare with project and CDOT process requirements. 
Materials Inspection and Testing
  • Works project managers and engineers in managing coordination with several different local government agencies and stakeholders. 
  • Interacts with Local Agencies and other non-CDOT stakeholders regarding projects on the state highways system. 
  • Coordinates with CDOT specialty units and internal departments to make sure the design and construction of projects meet State and Federal standardsc

Work Environment

  • Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am – 4:30 pm work hours, Monday-Friday with the opportunity for a flexible schedule
  • Will be required to travel around the state to project sites, conferences, meetings and training

  • Will be required to work days, nights, weekends and holidays (pending project schedule).

  • Potential special needs such as snow gate duty or emergency flood response is required.
