New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.  

About the Unit:
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has an opening for an Engineer-In-Training I with our Region 5 Engineering Team in Durango.  The team provides engineering expertise in developing, building, and maintaining a safe and integrated transportation system.  This includes managing  projects for upgrading, reconstructing, and maintaining the highway system, along with other projects that have federal, state and local funds.  Design, oversight of design, management of NEPA documentation, consultant management, construction management along with project management are provided.
 
About the Position:  
Under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, this Engineer-In-Training I is expected to gain engineering expertise and to apply engineering theories, principles, and standards to the design and construction of transportation projects.  As the selected candidate gains knowledge and experience, there is opportunity for advancement.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Learn to prepare and design engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates for roadway construction projects.   
  • Learn to assure quality and consistency of project design plans and procedures by applying engineering judgment and a wide variety of design and construction manuals, spreadsheets, forms, design aids, computer software, and Department procedures.
  • Learn to use engineering practices and calculation methods that meet CDOT and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) guidelines.
  • Learn to develop practical applications of professional engineering processes, theories, laws, principles, and techniques related to highway engineering.
  • Learn to develop computer software skills in Microstation/Openroads to produce design models and engineering plan sets.
  • Learn to assist the Project Manager on design and construction projects to gain experience in all aspects of contract and project administration.  
  • Attend review meetings to learn to ensure that plan, design, and construction transportation projects comply with engineering and regulatory guidelines.  
  • Learn to identify engineering and project objectives, anticipated complex features, problems, and possible solutions.  
  • With guidance, work with consultant engineers to complete design projects, maintain meeting minutes and execute task orders.
  • Learn to manage multiple projects and work with several different local government agencies at the same time.  Interact with Local Agencies and other non-CDOT organizations as they develop projects on the state highways system.  
  • Coordinate with CDOT specialty units and internal departments to make sure the design and construction of projects meet State and Federal standards.
  • Learn to represent the Department during design/construction project oversight processes by inspection of procedures, documentation of work done and methods used, construction activities, review of materials test results, conducting materials testing, completion of project diaries and coordination of inspectors and testers with work activities.
  • Learn to review submittals, materials, workmanship, or finished product or reject these when not in compliance.  
  • Other duties as assigned.


Work Environment:

  • Your schedule will be primarily Monday – Friday with opportunity for a flexible schedule.
  • After a training period, you may work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work.
  • Approximately 10% spent in the field, 90% spent in the office.
  • Regular travel required during work hours for project related activities, site visits, meetings, trainings and conference attendance.
  • Some overnight travel throughout Colorado to projects throughout the Region and meetings.
  • Required to work outside in all weather conditions, in close proximity to moving traffic, and over variable terrain.
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
