About the Unit
The Geographic Data and Application Development Specialist works in the GIS Support Unit of the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Division of Transportation Development (DTD). The work unit integrates, analyzes, and disseminates data for planning and project development using geographic and data management tools. The unit provides technical resources and training for geographic applications and tools to internal and external stakeholders.
About the Position
This position analyzes, designs, develops, integrates, maintains, prepares, disseminates, and presents information for use in developing transportation plans. This position presents data through maps, geographic applications, and web tools to internal / external decision makers, managers, and CDOT customers. This position directly participates in planning and project development by integrating, analyzing, and disseminating information, making customized and standardized maps as well as directly participating in the design and modification of tabular and spatial data structures. This position creates and maintains tools to acquire, manipulate and facilitate the exchange of data between differing enterprise databases. This position provides consultation and expertise for cartographic, data development, and management activities as well as CDOT planning and business processes to DTD.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to :
Technical Training, Support and Consultation
- Provide support and training to internal and external customers in the use and development of spatial and tabular data, tools and software for enhanced decision making and problem solving. Tools and software include ESRI ArcGIS, SQL, Python, PowerPoint and Excel.
- Help users develop, query, and interpret data and create maps, reports, and documents to present information.
- Participate in meetings with CDOT regions and federal / state / local agencies to help coordinate multi-agency data collection, data sharing, needs assessments, and analyses.
- Serve as a member of project teams to recommend, review, and test software.
- Provide advice and participate in the production and coordination of information used in planning documents, formal reports, and public meetings.

A Combination of Education and Experience :
A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least six (6) years.
