This work unit in Platteville exists to oversee operations and services in support of the social, economic, and environmental goals of the nation and the people of Colorado, to preserve and restore all roads, roadsides, structures, and miscellaneous facilities as nearly as possible in their original condition or as subsequently improved, to provide safe, economical and efficient highway transportation to the traveling public. The work unit ensures the safety, reliability, and availability of the equipment and vehicles operated in accordance with Departmental Guidelines and federal and State laws.
About this Position
This position provides mechanical support to Region 4 under the supervision of the Shop Foreman (HEM IV) and HEM IIIs. Position will perform routine preventative maintenance services. Services will include various systems found on pieces of heavy equipment such as engines/transmissions, cooling systems, brake systems, fuel systems, and hydraulic systems. Will train and assist in inspecting, diagnosing, installing, maintaining, servicing, repairing, and fabricating heavy equipment and service vehicles to ensure the safe and productive operation by transportation maintenance workers. Perform safety and compliance inspections required by state and federal law. Ensure readiness and operational safety of equipment 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, and in all weather conditions.
This position will be required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Type B within 6 months of hire that allows operation in Colorado, with no restrictions on air brakes as a condition of employment. CDOT provides the CDL training.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Perform maintenance on various small engines, pumps, and hand tools.
- Change engine oil and filters (oil, fuel, air)
- Service transmissions (changing fluids and/or filters)
- Service differentials (changing fluid and if applicable filters)
- Perform DOT/CDOT inspections
- Minor repairs needed during the services or inspections (i.e. wipers, lights, fasten loose hoses and wiring)
- All these services will be completed on CDOT owned equipment which will include, but are not limited to, 10-ton tandem snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, 6X6 and 4X4 trucks, snow blowers and 1 ton trucks
- Under the guidance of the shop foreman and HEM IIIs assist with specialized mechanic repairs, rebuild, modify, and install special systems on a variety of types of heavy and/or comparable specialized equipment, i.e., loaders, dozers, motor graders, lay down machines (paver), asphalt equipment, snow removal equipment, mowers and construction equipment.
- Learns and maintains current knowledge of all equipment and techniques to work on all systems such as: all vehicle systems, installing electrical, and electronic equipment, or repairing hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Ensures the equipment’s safe and productive operation, both in the shop and in the field under potentially adverse weather conditions.
- Under the guidance of the shop foreman and HEM IIIs assist with repairing and rebuilding vehicle and equipment systems; power trains, electrical, mechanical, lighting, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, steering, suspension, air conditioning, cab, computer-controlled sanders, and liquid de-icing systems.
- Prepares, reviews, and edits work orders accurately in SAP.
- Describes work performed, or to be performed, enters parts ordered, supplies and materials for the needed repair, and amount of worked hours on the piece of equipment. Performs record keeping and documentation on all assigned units, and tracks equipment maintenance.
- Keeps Federal DOT Inspection records on all equipment. Uses standard computer programs to aid in recordkeeping on equipment history and parts.
- Must abide by all safety regulations, policies, and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment. Attends and completes all required safety training.
- Attends industry training to remain current on equipment and repair techniques as well as various general training sessions for CDOT.
Work Environment:
- Summer work hours are Mon - Thur. 06:30 – 5:00 pm; Winter hours are Mon. - Fri. 08:00 - 4:30 pm
- Approximately 40% of the time is spent in the field and 60% spent in the equipment shop
- Required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays
- Some on-call time may be required
- May be required to work different shifts in emergency situations.
- Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where he/she can be reached for the purpose of responding to an emergency
- Required to lift up to 70 lbs
- Required to bend, kneel, climb in/out of trucks when maintaining and repairing equipment
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles
- Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions
- Frequent travel during work day to perform field repairs, as well as to attend trainings and meetings
- Required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time – hot and cold
- Exposure to loud noises
- Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin
- Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600V) and electrical shock
- May be exposed to cleaning chemicals and equipment lubrication and cooling fluids
- Must be able to hear and communicate via cell phone and state radio to relay information and respond to field calls
- Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties
- This position is required to have a Valid Colorado Driver's License and obtain a Commercial Driver's License Class B with no restrictions on air brakes or manual transmissions after 6 months of hire.
- New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training. Veteran CDOT employees are required to attend maintenance training one week out of each year.
