New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.
About the Unit
This work unit exists to support operations of 6 Maintenance Supervisor areas. This unit is responsible for the overall operation of all HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing systems, domestic water systems, sewer systems, avalanche mitigation, Gazex maintenance and operation, rock demolition, liquid systems, bulk fuel, used oil, any building structural needs and all bridge repair and related work for Grand Junction Maintenance Section 2 including snow removal. This work unit is utilized as support for all maintenance operations when needed and are required to respond twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
About the Position
The Utility Plant Operator I performs and directs others in performing the monitoring, compliance verification, installation, repair and preventive maintenance of CDOT’s domestic water and wastewater treatment plants throughout the Section. This position also completesrequired daily paperwork per Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) regulations.
CDOT has water treatment plants at various rest areas throughout Maintenance Section 2. Fresh water is pumped from wells, rivers, streams, or reservoirs to water treatment plants, where it is treated and distributed to customers. Water treatment plant operators such as this position run the equipment, control the processes, and monitor the plants that treat water to make it safe to drink. Operators read instruments and gauges to make sure processes are working properly, take samples, and run tests to determine the quality of the water being produced and at times, may adjust the amount of chemicals being added to the water. Used water, also known as wastewater, is treated and either returned to streams, rivers, and oceans, or used for irrigation.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Take samples per CDPHE guidelines at each rest area that has a fresh water and wastewater system throughout the maintenance section.
- Take the samples to a lab for testing and enter results into the CDPHE system.
- Interpret test results and make the appropriate adjustments to the plants to ensure compliance.
- Complete compliance paperwork including Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) per CDPHE guidelines at each rest area that has a fresh water and wastewater system throughout the maintenance section.
- Operate equipment to purify and clarify the water or dispose of sewage.
- Clean and maintain equipment, tanks, filter beds, and other work areas.
- Determine the proper way to treat fresh water and wastewater.
- Maintain water mains, water services, fire hydrants, water valves and backflow devices located within service areas.
- Ensure public health and safety by preventing and/or responding to sewage overflows and blockages.
- Inspect clean, maintain, construct, and repair wastewater collection systems including sanitary sewers, storm drains, pump stations, pipes, manholes, and catch basins.
- Perform pit mine inspections and and complete paperwork to keep Maintenance Section 2 in compliance with BOR regulations.
- Work throughout the Section on backflow preventer yearly inspection program.
- Work on wells and sewer projects within the section to assist with property management projects.
- Perform and direct training of onsite personnel on needs to keep all systems in compliance.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Work Environment:
- Primarily daytime hours Monday - Friday.
- Travel throughout the Section for training and visits to treatment facilities.
- Occasional overnight travel
- Required to drive CDOT vehicles.
- Required to use 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force regularly to move objects.
- Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather. Exposure to nonweather-related cold and hot temperatures.
- Contact with water or other liquids; or exposure to nonweather-related humid conditions.
- Exposure to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation, that affects the respiratory system, eyes or, the skin.
- Work may be performed in a closed or locked facility.
- Proximity to moving, mechanical part.
