DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is seeking full time custodians into a dynamic university environment where they are an essential ingredient to our operations. The University and the State of Colorado is committed to providing employees with a comprehensive and competitive benefits package that supports you, your health, and your family, including health, dental and vision coverage, tuition waive / discount program, paid annual leave, paid sick leave, paid holiday and flexible work schedules. We encourage you to review the many benefit options by visiting at https://dhr.colorado.gov/state-employees/state-of-colorado-employee-benefits.
Please note that each agency's contact information is different; therefore, we encourage all applicants to view the full, official job announcement which includes contact information and class title. Select the job you wish to view, then click on the "Print" icon.
As a custodian, you have an essential role in maintaining the cleanliness of our facilities which is crucial in supporting the learning and working environment of the University. If you take pride in your work and possess excellent customer service skills, we encourage you to apply. Open positions are for various shifts; hours and work weeks vary. Periodic shift work may be required. In addition to operating independently to perform the full range of custodial tasks, work leaders exercise some control over the continual work product of others.
DESCRIPTION OF JOB:
Duties: Assist in maintaining a healthy environment by providing outstanding custodial service for campus facilities. In the area of floor-care, duties include sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming and spot cleaning carpet, auto scrubbing, spray buffing, burnishing, refinishing wood, concrete, and vinyl composite floors (removing floor finish by sanding or stripping, then applying seal and wax) and carpet extraction. Cleaning duties include cleaning and re-lamping lighting fixtures, cleaning water fountains, emptying and cleaning waste containers, cleaning walls, doors, and windows, dusting flat surfaces and vents, cleaning and sanitizing all restroom fixtures, urinals and toilet bowls, cleaning toilet partitions and doors, sinks, and mirrors, restocking soap and paper products, straightening and moving furniture, shampooing upholstered furniture, setting up tables, chairs and media equipment for meetings, cleaning dry erase boards, securing areas as required (locking and unlocking rooms and buildings), inputting work requests and filling out time log in maintenance management system ("Schooldude"), cleaning and maintaining equipment, turning lights on and off, using proper personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, grippers, aprons, safety shoes), and attending training meetings on safety, cleaning procedures, and equipment and product use. Other related duties as assigned.
Decision Making: Within limits prescribed by the operation, choices involve selecting alternatives that affect the manner and speed with which tasks are carried out. These choices do not affect the standards or results of the operation itself because there is typically only one correct way to carry out the operation. These alternatives include independent choice of such things as priority and personal preference for organizing and processing the work, proper tools or equipment, speed, and appropriate steps in the operation to apply. By nature, the data needed to make decisions can be numerous but are clear and understandable, so logic is needed to apply the prescribed alternative. Positions can be taught what to do to carry out assignments and any deviation in the manner in which the work is performed does not change the end result of the operation.
Complexity: Positions apply established, standard guidelines that cover work situations and alternatives. Action taken is based on learned, specific guidelines that permit little deviation or change as the task is repeated. Any alternatives to choose from are clearly right or wrong at each step.
Line/Staff Authority: The direct field of influence the work of a position has on the organization is as a work leader. The work leader is partially accountable for the work product of two or more full-time equivalent positions, including timeliness, correctness, and soundness. At least one of the subordinate positions must be in the same series or at a comparable conceptual level. Typical elements of direct control over other positions by a work leader include assigning tasks, monitoring progress and workflow, checking the product, scheduling work, and establishing work standards. The work leader provides input into supervisory decisions made at higher levels, including signing leave requests and approving work hours. This level may include positions performing supervisory elements that do not fully meet the criteria for the next level in this factor.
