Description
A CNS Client is requesting a Senior Machinist to work as the subject matter expert in the
fabrication of one of a kind scaled, hydraulic models for design verification or construction
planning. The Senior Machinist must have an extensive knowledge and capability in the trade
and practice of machining, the use of machine tools and associated equipment.
Essential Functions

- Shape, machine, and weld utilizing a diverse set of materials, of metals and plastics, using standard and specialized machine hop equipment to create unique components for laboratory and field research and testing.
- Fabricate components for physical hydraulic models: Determines the best methods and materials for fabricating complex three-dimensional shapes such as model-scale spillways, intakes, and gate structures, in consultation with engineering staff.
- Fabricate instrumentation and data-collection platforms: Consults with engineering staff on instrumentation and data-collection on needs for laboratory and field studies, then fabricates and installs such systems to meet the project needs.
- Work collaboratively with engineering and shop staff as to what the best materials, methods, and designs, of model equipment is to be used.
- Assists in the assembly and construction of hydraulic models, lab equipment, and materials testing facilities, sometimes requiring significant manual labor.
- Create forms and complex surfaces for the forming and molding of acrylic and other materials.
- Maintains machine shop equipment and assists in the maintenance of laboratory facilities and equipment. Requests needed services, repairs, and recommends purchase of new or improved
- equipment as required.
- Will be required to operate forklifts and other motorized hydraulic equipment in connection with officially assigned duties
- Provide a weekly report to the Lab Manager by the close of business the following day, documenting the project and work performed.

The contractor shall have training in the following:
- Confined Space Entry, Hazardous Energy
- Protection (Lock-Out-Tag), Fall Protection, and First Aid.
- Demonstrate a practical knowledge of machining techniques and equipment as well as fabrication materials sufficient to make expert recommendations regarding fabrication of specialized models and instrumentation, and to fabricate and assemble said components.
- Extensive experience of 10 years or more in the machining trade, to include the successful completion of a 4- year apprenticeship.
- Expert proficiency in the accepted machining trade methods and techniques, and proficiency with machining tools and equipment including milling machines, lathes, drill presses, brakes, and more.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications and utilize AutoCad to determine required geometries, dimensions, and tolerances for components to be fabricated.
- Ability to utilize Computer Numeric Control (CNC) equipment to produce components, including the ability to program and edit processes using MasterCam.
- Ability to work with and fabricate components from a variety of metals, plastics, and other materials.
- Detailed technical knowledge of machining and materials combined with excellent communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work as part of a team
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to operate heavy machinery such as a forklift.
