Job Summary:
The incumbent is under the direction of Patrol Captain; who exercises supervisory responsibilities to plan, direct, implement, evaluate, and coordinate the functions of the Law Enforcement Services-Police program.
Duties & Functions:
Incumbent performs first line supervisory personnel responsibilities over police officers, security officers, and reserves.
Schedules and grants leave requests.
He/she also plans and designates shift coverage responsibilities, which provide 24/7 police coverage.
Structures assignments and assigns work to subordinates based upon priorities and special requirements.
Incumbent informs subordinate employees in advance of performance expectations and deficiencies; also completing annual Performance Appraisals for subordinates.
Responsible for the Patrol function of the Law Enforcement program that includes the inspections of vehicle and equipment, uniform attire and training requirements.
The Patrol Sergeant performs a range of police duties requiring personal knowledge and skills in the administration and management of shift coverage and assignment of personnel.
Sergeant will train subordinates, review and approve officer's reports, while providing leadership and guidance to subordinates.
He/she requires independent judgment for on-the-spot decisions on critical and noncritical matters.
Incumbent will also be required to assume on-scene command of the Tactical Team when activated for critical incidents.
Responds to call-outs concerning misdemeanor and felony crimes under Tribal, Federal, State and local laws.
Investigates, apprehends and detains all person charged with criminal violations.
At least 25% of the time is involved in completing, independent investigations that extend over several days to several weeks.
Will conduct internal investigations of allegations of employee misconduct, complete investigative reports, make recommendations for disciplinary action.
Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Patrol Captain, Chief of Police or designee to fulfill the Department's needs, objectives and or goals.
Knowledge. Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated ability and experience to supervise police officers and personnel in accomplishing daily law enforcement functions and ability to instruct and train other in major aspect of police activity.
Knowledge of supervisory skills and techniques in order to supervise and direct and effective and productive law enforcement workforce.
Ability to plan, organize and reprioritize work to meet changing deadline and knowledge of various administrative support functions, including procurement, personnel management, budget property and supple and other related activities.
Comprehensive knowledge of police methods and procedures and of the techniques used in police work and a thorough and complete understanding the applicable Federal, State and Tribal laws and customs.
Knowledge of proper law enforcement procedures including methods of searching seizing, arresting and self-defense.
Security. Clearance. and Background Requirements:
In accordance with P.L. 101-603, Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act of 1990, the applicant must successfully complete a thorough background investigation. The background investigation will include but limited to: applicant screening, criminal history check, credit check, work history check, education check, fingerprint check, oral board review, and polygraph test.
Education & Experience Requirements:
Must possess a diploma of graduation from an accredited High School or G.E.D. equivalent
Successfully completed a combination of education, and including current certified training from an accredited State POST Academy or Federal Law Enforcement Academy, and supervisory training.
Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience which includes Personnel Supervision/Discipline, Shift Assignments, Patrol Functions, and Emergency Response that clearly demonstrates possession of the supervisory knowledge and abilities.
The applicant is required as an incidental duty, to operate a government-owned or Tribal leased motor vehicle, in the performance of duties; therefore, a valid state driver's license is required.
Applicant must have a safe driving record within a three (3) years period prior to appointment, and meet the Tribes' safe driving requirements.
Specialized Experience:
The applicant must demonstrate progressively responsible supervisory and management experience which demonstrate:
Initiative, ingenuity, resourcefulness, and judgement for personnel management.
Ability to think logically and objectively, to analyze and evaluate facts and related information and arrive at sound conclusions.
Skill in written and oral reports and presentations of administrative and investigative finding in a clear, concise, and impartial manner.
Tact, discretion, and capacity for obtaining the cooperation and confidence of others along with the community.
Basis of Rating;
All applicants for this position will be rated and ranked based upon the extent and quality of their experience, training/and or education as reflected on the application. Applicants will be further evaluated according to the degree to which they possess or have the potential to acquire knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics as listed below. Qualifications, Tribal, Indian and veteran preference eligibility will be determined on the basis of information submitted.
Physical Requirement:
Applicant must pass medical examination and perform the Physical Efficiency (PEB) test prior to appointment; and successfully perform the PED test annually as part of the physical requirement.
Must successfully complete a drug screening test prior to appointment.
Applicant must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of application.
NOTE: As the Patrol Sergeant he or she will be subject to call-out as needed by the department The Patrol Sergeant answers directly to the Patrol Captain or Chief of Police, of the Colorado River Indian Tribes-Law Enforcement Services.
