Electric Underground Linear Design Engineer

Electric Advanced Design – Engineer III

 

Colorado Springs Utilities seeks an Electrical Engineer to join the Electric Advanced Design team.  The Electric Advanced Design team is a newly formed team tasked with supporting several areas including substations, transmission, distribution, and advanced technology elements related to microgrids, distribution automation, and much more.  Because this team has a large variety of work, we are looking for individuals who are interested in learning and participating in projects across all disciplines.

As an integral member of the team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to multiple projects in multiple disciplines. You will work and learn directly under Senior and Principal Engineers who support our substations, transmission, and distribution systems and will gain skills in each area.

Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

Distribution Engineering

  • Complete electric distribution designs and drawings for new substation feeders, infrastructure upgrades and replacements, and system reliability projects
  • Develop and manage Conduit Manager line models for the distribution of underground lines
  • Provide support to electric planning with project development, cost estimates, line routing options, and system upgrade scoping
  • Participate in advanced technology projects such as Distributed Energy Integration, Microgrid Design, Enhanced Power Customers

Transmission Engineering

  • Complete electric transmission designs and drawings for underground projects.  Participate in preparing design packages including project drawings, calculations & specifications, and reviewing the same from consultants for externally delivered projects
  • Develop and manage Conduit Manager line models for transmission underground lines.  Assist in developing and documenting appropriate ratings and operational limits for the electric system
  • Review requests from developers and other entities to ensure compatibility with Utilities’ easements/infrastructure and code compliance

General

  • Provide support to internal line crews including material recommendations, damage assessments, and inventory coordination
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Electrical Engineers, Designers, Field Engineering, Civil/Structural, and many additional internal & external departments (ie. surveying, environmental, City, County & State requirements) members on project initiation, development, engineering, and construction
  • Develop project schedules, and ensure all tasks are completed on time to support project delivery
  • Visit project sites and work with field teams to develop solutions and corresponding designs
  • Work with internal and external sources to get designs fabricated, reserve or procure materials, and monitor delivery to the sites
  • Review contracts and specifications to ensure compliance with engineering and material standards
  • Evaluate and monitor outside consultants, contractors, and vendors to ensure compliance with specifications, bid proposals, and obligations

What will it take to be successful in this position?  A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university is required for this position.  The ideal candidate will offer 4 or more years of experience in supporting a utility or working directly for a utility.

Engineering and design work in substations, electric distribution, electric transmission, or a closely related field would be preferred.  Additionally, we are interested in your experience in the following areas, so please be sure to highlight them on your resume/application:

  • Project, contract, and vendor management
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively communicate, using both written and verbal communication, with diverse groups
  • Working knowledge and application of industry standards, safety standards, and current design codes such as AISC, ACI, ASCE 113, IEEE, NES,C and others
  • Working knowledge of Schneider Electric Conduit Manager is an added plus
  • Electric distribution design requirements and construction techniques are an added plus
  • Transmission design and engineering, and construction techniques are an added plus
  • FE certification and active pursuit of PE is desirable and may be required for further advancement
