Principal Electrical Engineer V – Substation

As the Colorado Springs community continues to grow, so does our electric system, and we are continuing to build our Substation Engineering team for the future to contribute to the protection of our system's reliability. Our team ensures our substation equipment and controls meet the needs of our transmission and distribution systems and infrastructure today and for the future. We are hiring a Principal Electrical Engineer V to develop and execute maintenance duties related to the design, expansion, and upgrades of our substations. You will leverage your engineering expertise to sustain and maintain the needs of our transmission and distribution systems and infrastructure today and for the future.
How Will You Make an Impact?
- Serving as the subject matter expert for all substation equipment, including power transformers, arc-resistance switchgears, mobile substations, power circuit breakers, high-voltage disconnect switches, high-voltage and distribution capacitor banks, and series reactors - and for relevant NERC standards (PRC-005 and FAC-008)
- Developing and maintaining substation equipment technical specifications, maintenance plans, and operating manuals
- Leading the procurement of substation equipment through working with procurement staff to manage and procure substation equipment and service contracts, including proposal evaluation
- Leading substation equipment design reviews and analyzing factory acceptance tests
- Forecasting and planning substation equipment replacements
- Analyzing and interpreting the results of substation equipment tests and recommending appropriate actions
- Analyzing and prioritizing maintenance work and developing maintenance intervals and practices for all substation equipment
- Providing expert technical support (including after-hours support based on business and project needs) for field personnel and design engineers for substation projects
- Providing expert guidance on standards for substation spare parts, materials, and equipment - and incorporating necessary materials and equipment into the system
- Developing, maintaining, and administering relevant training to substation personnel, including Substation Hazard Communication training - and training and mentoring junior engineers

Who You Are
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering is required - an emphasis in Power Systems is valued; a Master's Degree is valued
- Demonstrated experience (i.e., typically 7 years) in substation maintenance engineering, or in combination with substation design engineering
- Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license is valued
- Knowledge of regulations unique to substations (e.g., EPA, Wildlife Protection)
- Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver's license is required
- Ability to communicate effectively, prioritize and adapt to changing operational needs, and collaborate
