Senior Transport Network Engineer
As a Transport Network Engineer, your primary responsibility is to design, implement, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize transportation network infrastructure, ensuring seamless and efficient data communication across multiple systems and platforms. You will develop and manage robust transport solutions incorporating DC power, microwave radio, Optical Transport Network (OTN), Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET), and RF data technologies. You will be responsible for managing network performance and troubleshooting any issues that may arise while maintaining high security, reliability, and scalability standards. Your expertise will support the organization’s operational needs, improve network efficiency, and drive innovation in transport technologies.
Duties / Responsibilities :
Design, deploy, and manage Ciena DWDM / ROADM infrastructure, Aviat microwave networks, SEL Icon Sonet Mux systems, GE MDS radio systems, and low-voltage DC power systems
Research, evaluate, design, plan, implement, and test organization-wide transport network systems to support IT and organizational strategies and roadmaps
Develop and maintain comprehensive network design and mapping documentation
Manage project timelines for network extensions, upgrades, and lifecycle replacement efforts
Oversee the installation and upgrade of new and existing equipment, hardware, and software
Implement and manage network monitoring, logging, and alerting systems
Monitor and test network performance, providing performance statistics
Troubleshoot network issues, perform root cause analysis, document findings, and implement corrective actions
Develop Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for implementation and maintenance activities
Participate in the Network Transport Services 24x7 on-call support rotation, covering a range of network standards and technologies, including OTN, DWDM, Microwave, and SONET
Ensure quality of work performed in compliance with standard operating policies
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and work procedures
Ensure equipment, tools, and materials are used safely and efficiently
Review technical documents and designs for accuracy
Flexibility in scheduling to meet business needs
Required Skills / Abilities :
Strong attention to detail
Excellent problem-solving skills to troubleshoot RF, fiber, and DC power equipment issues
Self-motivated and capable of working independently or in small teams
Ability to coordinate emergency restoration under time constraints
Experience working in hazardous environments, including substations, power plants, water treatment plants, and wastewater treatment plants\
Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and handle ladders, push, pull, and lift equipment
Continuously monitor and analyze emerging technologies and industry trends to keep the organization at the forefront of innovation
Education and Experience :
High school diploma or equivalent required
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technology field preferred
Relevant and progressively responsible experience in designing, implementing, and supporting DWDM / ROADM networks, microwave radio networks, RF networks, and SONET networks
Certifications in Ciena, Blue Planet MCP, or other relevant network technologies are highly valued
Technical knowledge and skills in DWDM / ROADM technologies, OTN technologies, TCP / IP networking and devices, Ciena Blue Planet MCP, Aviat Microwave, SEL Icon, RF propagation modeling, microwave path analysis, frequency coordination, and interference analysis
Proficient in installing various types of communication equipment, including microwave radio, UHF radio, -48Vdc power systems, SONET, OTN, and environmental alarms
Experience with R56 communication site standards, including rack installation, ladder rack requirements, grounding requirements, environmental requirements, and cable running and dressing
Proficient in the use of tools including Digital Voltmeter (DVM), Wattmeter, Cable and antenna analyzer, Spectrum Analyzer, RS232 analyzer, Fiber optic visual scope and power meter, Basic hand tools, and Power tools
Physical Requirements :
Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds and push / pull 50-pound loads
Ability to stand and walk up to eight hours per day, climb multiple sets of stairs, and carry materials weighing between 40 and 60 pounds
Ability to ride in a vehicle for up to four hours to travel to and from job sites
Ability to work in different temperatures and changing weather conditions
Ability to traverse and inspect all areas of job sites in various weather conditions; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, stooping, or stretching
Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers
