The Student Leadership, Involvement & Community Engagement (SLiCE) office is located in the heart of the Lory Student Center. SLiCE offers a broad range of programs and services for Colorado State University students, faculty, staff, and the community in the areas of leadership development, involvement, basic needs security programming and community engagement. Through the programs at SLiCE, students can find both support and resources to graduate as engaged, active participants and leaders in their local, national, and global communities. The work of SLiCE staff members is guided by and in alignment with CSU’s Principles of Community, the Division of Student Affairs Values, and the Lory Student Center Mission. The office mission is “In solidarity, we are unyielding in our commitment to: identify and critically reflect upon oppressive systems that perpetuate harm in order to construct and foster belonging within purposeful communities. We envision an equitable and just society.”

The mission of the Lory Student Center (LSC) is to serve as a student-centered organization at the heart of campus, providing programs and services that create an inclusive community and inspire active, engaged learning. As an auxiliary enterprise within the Division of Student Affairs, the LSC is a comprehensive student union recognized nationally as one of the leading university centers. The LSC annual operating budget is approximately $40 million. Nearly 125 full-time career staff and 650 student and hourly staff serve approximately 24,000 people entering the facility on a daily basis and hosts approximately 13,000 annual events and meetings. Areas within the Lory Student Center include the CSU Bookstore; Campus Activities; Lory Dining Services; Marketing; Operations; Student Leadership, Involvement & Community Engagement; and an extensive array of business and service partners.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director for Student Government is a critical supervisory position, which

provides leadership, vision, and supervision to the operational, fiscal management, administrative planning, and professional development of the student government, including:

  • Assessing ASCSU operations, policies, procedures, and financial functions for improved effectiveness and efficiencies and implementing changes.
  • Directly supervising one full-time Administrative Professional Assistant, and advising 3 official student leaders elected annually by the Student Body. This position is also responsible for the recruitment, selection, and training of ASCSU departmental advisors, who are full- time University employees.
  • Overseeing the management of budgets along with ASCSU leadership totaling over $2.1M in student fees, ensuring proper expenditures of allocated funds and that contractual obligations are met.
  • Acting as an advocate of diplomacy when interacting with student leaders involving decision-making and program development.
  • Working with University leaders in a variety of campus offices including Office of the President, Provost, Vice President for Student Affairs, Vice President for Operations, Office of the General Counsel, etc. including providing updates to Vice President’s Council.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective and collaborative working relationships with multiple constituents including campus offices, students, staff, faculty members and various other community groups.
  • Working in a fast paced, flexible environment with a focus on high quality individual and group interactions, and verbal and written communications and presentations.
  • Having expertise in student engagement and development, and a positive demeanor and strong work ethic, with an understanding and commitment to university shared governance, as well as equity and inclusion.
  • Brings a robust, educational dialogue to leadership and the campus community as a whole through diversity of thoughts, ideas, and identities.
  • Serving as a collaborator and resource, with high emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and strong analytical, quantitative, and communication skills along with the ability to mediate difficult conversations.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Earned master’s degree in student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or a related field OR bachelor’s and minimum three years full-time, professional experience in student affairs or related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to support institutional priorities related to diversity, inclusion and social justice.
  • Demonstrated experience directly supervising staff.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of parliamentary procedure.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting, fiscal management, and risk management.
  • Professional experience advising student government organizations and implementing co-curricular programs, including trainings, workshops, and major campus events
  • Strong foundation in student success, student learning, and leadership education
  • Demonstrated success in conflict resolution, team building, and fostering positive group dynamics
  • Proven ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders while promoting an inclusive campus environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with experience providing one-on-one support and working effectively across diverse constituent groups
  • Advanced written communication abilities, including development of professional reports, proposals, and presentation materials
  • Resourceful individual with high emotional intelligence, self- motivation, and strong analytical, quantitative, and communication skills along with the ability to mediate difficult conversations

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Advising & Team Development Duty/Responsibility

  • Serve as the primary advisor to ASCSU Cabinet (executive) and Senate (legislative) branches. Attend meetings and events, regularly meet one-on-one with branch leaders, and provide guidance and support to all members.
  • Lead and advising team of professional staff on and off-campus to support the leaders of ASCSU.
  • Oversight for operation, fiscal management, and administrative planning of ASCSU
  • Assist ASCSU members in organizational management and leadership challenges such as general problem-solving, mediation/conflict resolution, recruitment and retention of members, inclusion of a diverse student population, on-boarding members, leadership transitions, risk management, etc. Assist ASCSU students with strategic planning, programming, and staffing to ensure ASCSU functions as a dynamic, vibrant student government that provides all students with opportunities to be actively engaged in educational and social programs and events
  • Inspire, empower, and educate student leaders to accomplish goals
  • Support ASCSU students in management of budget totaling over $2.1M, to ensure proper expenditure of allocated student fees. Assist students to interpret and apply rules and regulations to their structure, spending and activities.

  • Annually on-board newly elected student officials and student employees through orientation events and trainings
  • Annually coordinate with ASCSU cabinet members and lead ASCSU retreats and trainings, including program content, facilitation, logistical coordination, facilitator selection and training, contract management, and assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Oversee, train, and support staff and faculty volunteers who serve as advisors for ASCSU Cabinet Departments. Coordinate and lead the ASCSU advising team, ensuring students and advisors are meeting regularly and have the resources they need to be successful.
  • Train ASCSU advisors on campus policies and practices as related to event planning and other organization functions by providing resources in the form of orientations, handbooks, and other written materials; workshops, training, and individual consultations as needed. Meet regularly with advisors
  • Assist in the facilitation of mandatory University trainings such as Sexual Harassment Awareness, Bullying in the Workplace, etc.
  • Ensure all pertinent employee records and data are accurate and up-to-date.

Percentage Of Time 30 Job Duty Category Coordination Duty/Responsibility

  • Identify a project area within or beyond SLiCE this position will support / lead, based on the needs of department and professional interest (not to exceed 5% of duty allocation)
  • Serve as a collaborator with the SLiCE Leadership Team contributing to the development and implementation of the SLiCE vision, mission, and values aligned with University strategic plans; serve on LSC/CSU committees; represent SLiCE/LSC on Division, University, and external committees.
  • The position will be responsible for programmatic and event planning decisions connected to the CSU’s Year of Democracy and Thematic Year initiative.
  • Participate in relevant meetings with students, faculty, administrators, external stakeholders, and others to ensure effective prioritization and follow up 
  • Attend ASCSU sponsored programs, establish connections with students and have overall knowledge of ASCSU and Colorado State University 
  • Lead crisis management process for ASCSU and provide timely communication with proper administrators and departments  
  • Attend ASCSU cabinet and senate meetings, taking notes for university leadership.  Coordinate team of professional staff in the Division of Student Affairs to assist in notetaking and attendance of cabinet and senate meetings 
  • In collaboration with ASCSU student leadership and the Office of Equal Opportunity, determine best practices for hiring student leaders through applications, interviews, etc. Ensure student leaders are appropriately trained on all necessary topics. Work closely with student leaders on performance plans, evaluations, and any corrective actions 
  • Provide ongoing guidance and supervision to ASCSU in the areas of representation, group development, transitioning, organization management, student leadership, and other functions necessary for student-run organizations. 
  • Coordinate annual ASCSU Alumni Homecoming reunion including program planning committee, reservations, entertainment, invitations, catering, etc. 
  • Serve as the ASCSU primary contact for the General Counsel’s Office, the Office of Risk Management and Insurance, and CSU Leadership and Administration for all legal and risk management related program pre-planning, document and contractual inquiries and approvals.  .

  • Demonstrate active engagement with and support of SLiCE, Lory Student Center, Division of Student Affairs, and ASCSU departments Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Serve in a leadership role on the SLiCE leadership team, contributing to departmental initiatives, identifying and resolving department-wide issues, and communicating outcomes to direct reports.
  • Contribute to SLiCE’s and ASCSU’s strategic planning, program design and implementation, budget development and administration.
  • Coordinate and conduct evaluation/assessment efforts programs; coordinate and complete semi-annual and annual program reflections/reports.
  • Support and coordinate departmental assessment initiatives, connecting outcomes to divisional and institutional goals and managing the development of assessment and evaluation tools for programs and services.
  • Serve as a contributing member of SLiCE and the Lory Student Center staffs. This could include but is not limited to retreat and workshop facilitation, staff training planning and execution, program attendance, travel with Alternative Breaks, and serving on committees to further support the mission and purpose of SLiCE, the Lory Student Center, and the Division of Student Affairs.
