Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

LOCATION : This position is duty stationed on the island of Guam, a self-governing territory of the United States located 3,300 miles west of Hawaii and 1,500 miles east of the Philippines. Guam averages 86 degrees (F) year-round with a multitude of outdoor, cultural and commercial activities. Field work will occur primarily on military lands on Guam administered by Naval Facilities Engineering Command Marianas. Office work will occur in the CEMML leased office in Tamuning (Harmon) area of Central Guam.

This is a fully in-person position and is not eligible for hybrid or remote work arrangements.

Position Summary

A Little Fire Ant Control Biological Technician position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position is a full-time appointment and will be physically located in Guam. The majority of the work will be conducted on US military bases. Military affiliation is not required to apply for this position.

The Little Fire Ant Control Biological Technician will conduct vegetation clearing, transect cutting, ant population delineations, and chemical control of invasive little fire ants (Wasmannia auropunctata) on military lands. The Biological Technician will also be responsible for operating gas and battery powered tools, including bush cutters, chainsaws, and hedgers. This position will also be responsible for recording and entering field data. There will likely be opportunities to assist with other ecological tasks, including surveys for endangered species.

The Little Fire Ant Control Biological Technician will be expected to carry out tasks in a safe, conscientious manner with an emphasis on workplace safety, the proper use of pesticides, tools, and biosecurity. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team of field technicians directed by the LFA Task Leader and supervised by the project Entomologist. Desired candidates should be willing to work as part of a team and maintain a positive attitude.

These positions depend on continued funding by project sponsors.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of work experience with landscaping, agriculture, pest-control, or natural resources. Experience needs to be well-documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, or non-profit organization in the appropriate field.
  • Must be capable of walking several consecutive miles while carrying gear and performing manual labor in a hot tropical environment, often under windy / rainy conditions on uneven terrain on most days.
  • Must have experience conducting fieldwork and accurately recording, entering, and proofing data.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using field data collection applications, compasses, maps, data tablets, and GPS units.
  • Must have experience conducting invasive species management utilizing chemical, cultural, biological and / or mechanical control techniques.
  • Ability to take photographs and collect biological samples for identification.
  • Preferred Job Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in biology, zoology, ecology, wildlife sciences, botany, agriculture, or a closely related science.
  • More than two (2) years' work experience with natural or agricultural resources.
  • Experience implementing methods for control of little fire ants or other insect species.
  • Experience working in Micronesia, Hawaii or other tropical environments in the biological, natural resources, or agricultural fields.
  • Experience working on a military installation and interacting with military staff.
  • Familiarity with DOD / Navy environmental and safety regulations.
  • Possession of Guam CORE pest control applicator's license, or equivalent from qualifications from other States.

  • Implement field sampling program under direction of LFA Task Lead Biologist and CEMML Supervisory Entomologist.
  • Conduct a variety of invasive species monitoring and operational management activities.
  • Vegetation clearing, transect cutting and trail maintenance within jungle areas.
  • Operates tools and equipment commonly used in ecological resource management, which may include but is not limited to, hand tools, weed and brush-cutters, radios, smartphone applications, global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers, and 4x4 trucks.
  • Responsible for care and maintenance of field equipment.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures for the control of little fire ants including surveys, site preparation and pesticide application.
  • Maintains accountability for field supplies and equipment.
  • Follow all CSU, CEMML and military installation environmental and safety protocols.
  • Position requires physical exertion to operate equipment and carry supplies and materials long distances over uneven terrain. Long periods of standing, walking over rough uneven surfaces, recurring bending, stooping, lifting, reaching, or similar activities are expected.

  • Responsible for maintenance of proper pesticide PPE, safe and accurate pesticide mixing, handling, storage and record keeping.
  • Responsible for care and maintenance of power equipment, pesticide application equipment.
  • Cleans, sorts and labels target and non-target ant specimens by collection locale, date and survey type.
