Job Description:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented student intern to join our team at the Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) La Veta Field Office. The intern will assist with a wide range of activities associated with forest land management, watershed protection, and community outreach.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with project layout, including timber marking and boundary marking
- Shadow project administration and participate in data processing
- Conduct insect and disease assessments, and participate in hands-on field activities such as slash piling and chipping
- Participate in office activities, including shadowing programmatic functions, assisting in data processing, and developing management recommendations
- Work with supervisor(s) to prepare a summer work plan, set goals and learning objectives, and evaluate progress
- Complete two professional writing assignments throughout the summer
- Attend a mandatory day-long orientation session and participate in hourly internship duties from May 27 to August 15
Requirements:
- Undergraduate student pursuing a degree at a Colorado institution of higher education
- Good academic standing (GPA > 2.0)
- Demonstrated career interest in forestry or natural resource fields
- Valid driver's license, ability to obtain a driver's license, or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date
- Experience working as an effective team member and clear communicator
- Exhibits a positive attitude and willingness to learn
Preferred Qualifications:
- Good written and oral communications
- One season of forestry field experience
- Experience operating chainsaws, including official certification in chainsaw operation such as S-212
- Ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles, manual transmission vehicles, and UTVs/ATVs in variable weather and road conditions
- Experience using forestry equipment, identifying trees, grasses, forbs, and shrubs in the western U.S., and navigating with maps, compass, and GPS units
- Experience using ArcGIS and MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, and e-mail
- National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) S130/190 Wildfire Training
- Successful completion of Natural Resources Ecology and Measurements (NR220) and/or F230 Forestry Field Measurements at the CSU Mountain Campus, or successful completion of a similar course at another college/university
