Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.


Position Summary
A Wildlife Technician (Tech/Support II) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands. This position is located at Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island in Hawaii. The work site is located about 45 minutes from Hilo and Kona. The terrain is very rugged, consisting of extensive lava flows intermixed with vegetated areas. The elevation is about 7,000 feet and the climate is relatively cool and varies from wet to dry.
The technician supports activities to manage invasive species and monitor native Hawaiian species. Management includes using lethal and non-lethal means to control small mammals, feral ungulates, invertebrates (e.g., aphid, ant), and non-native-vegetation. The technician inspects fence lines/gates and performs repairs. The technician assists with monitoring native bird and bat species including deploying and retrieving electronic monitoring devices and cameras. The technician collects data and provides written and oral reports. The technician primarily works as part of a field crew, but also works alone. The position is primarily field work (90%) with about 10% office time.

Required Job Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in natural resource management including experience in managing invasive species in natural areas.
  • Experience operating and maintaining various power equipment used in vegetation control including but not limited to line trimmers, backpack sprayers, chainsaws, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience working in remote field locations; ability to walk up to 5 miles per day in rugged terrain carrying materials and supplies under all weather conditions.
  • Experience driving 4-wheel drive vehicles on unimproved roads.
  • Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, zoology, conservation biology, or related field.
  • Experience implementing nuisance animal control using live-capture traps and lethal traps.
  • Experience with constructing and repairing ungulate proof fences over rough lava terrain.
  • Experience in welding and fence fabrication.
  • Knowledge of small engine and power tool repair.
  • Experience applying herbicides or pesticides to control nonnative invasive plants and invertebrates.
  • Experience working with native wildlife, including threatened and endangered species, to include surveying, monitoring, and data collection and management.
  • Experience collecting field data using consistent methods and entering data into databases.
  • Experience using a hand held GPS unit and/or a mobile data collector device to navigate in the field.
  • Demonstrated experience working on team.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • State of Hawaii Commercial Pesticide Applicator certification for Category 2 Forest Pest Control. 5
  • Experience working on a military installation.

  • Perform maintenance and repairs to fence lines and gates to prevent ungulate ingress into conservation areas.

  • Inspect security fences for Hawaiian Hoary bat entanglements.
  • Review camera data and report ungulate ingress, fence line and gate damage.

  • Follow all federal and state regulations on use of chemical controls including pesticides and rodenticides.
