Position Summary
Reporting to the Production Manager, this position is responsible for the safe and effective operation of the production lines. This involves staff training and supervision, ensuring adequate process scheduling flow, monitoring and maintenance of equipment and monitoring of safety and environmental regulations.
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Supervises the work of the production department. Provides training and leadership in the execution of activities to produce a quality product. Ensures that staff is trained, aware and adheres to all procedures and work rules, including SOC’s, Work Instructions, safety rules, etc. Enforce through supervision and disciplinary guidelines
- Responsible for Housekeeping and fostering pride in clean work areas, maintaining a clean work environment throughout the plant. Identify and report/correct sources of dust generation
- Plans and supervises production changeovers to accommodate time deadlines and minimal amounts of scrap. Reviews production line status prior to startup of products to ensure that “off-spec” material generation is minimized
- Ensures a constant production of quality material, which involves monitoring the mechanical process and final product. Ensures that product being run is of top quality. Coordinates production runs with the Materials Manager, Customer Service and Operations Manager
- Performs minor troubleshooting for all aspects of production process, except electrical. This involves monitoring process controls and adjusting to maintain optimum process conditions. Analyzes problem to determine effect on product and if repair is required immediately. Requests assistance from the maintenance staff for major or electrical problems
- Ensures all legislative and safety requirements are followed. This involves regulation for OSHA, company safety policies and procedures, and ensuring adequate training in First Aid
- Review production line operation throughout shift to ensure that lines are operating correctly and efficiently
- Review all Production Order (“Blend Sheets”) prior to providing them to the shift, to ensure the correct feeder configuration and production notes are outlined
- Monitor production line control panels to ensure that lines are operating according to SOC’s and that Production Rate setpoint is at Standard Rate for the product
- Assist in all unscheduled equipment outages to minimize scrap and downtime
- Raw materials/blend sheets/labels are checked, prepared, and staged ahead. Assign blends to be made (as needed) – monitor materials used/labeling of the blend and housekeeping (materials returned, parts used first, messes cleaned up). Monitor resin levels in railcars/silo’s and assigns resins to be pumped into silos
- Coordinate actual lot usage for lot traceability
- Coordinate with Raw Material Control with respect to batch certification
- Coordinate with Maintenance to troubleshoot equipment problems
- Coordinate with Q.A. with respect to quality issues
- Coordinate with Shipping and Receiving to load/unload railcars and ship and receive on off hours as necessary
- Schedules vacations and replacement for workers as required
- Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to the spirit of total quality and continuous improvement in performing the position duties
- Works various hours and overtime, as situations require.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervises the work of a group or unit. Provides periodic checks of work assignments. Involved in recruitment, hiring, training, and completion of performance appraisals. Recommends personnel actions such as training, disciplinary actions, promotions, and salary increases.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Good communication, mathematical and interpersonal skills for contact with all other plant departments.
- Demonstrates leadership skills.
- Thorough knowledge of Company policies and procedures and the ability to enforce them.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required.
- Specific training and job knowledge is required with a minimum of three (3) years of manufacturing experience or previous supervisory experience.
