Heavy Equipment Repair Technician   The Heavy Equipment Repair Technician (ERT) is the technical expert of this class and performs, supervises, trains, and may demonstrate skilled and unskilled minor through expert level complex mechanical repairs, preventive and corrective maintenance to any Columbia Association (CA) owned, leased, or rented manual or powered stationary or mobile equipment, automobiles, trucks, tractors, trailers, boats, hand-held and stationary equipment.   Essential Functions:   Must be able to read and write at a proficient level. Must be able to proficiently read, interpret, and act on printed technical material and illustrations. Must be able to carry out with no supervision, and to completion, assigned tasks and projects, both short and long term continuing assignments. Must be able to use, demonstrate, and train in the proper use of required equipment and power tools, for  both efficiency and safely. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to staff and vendors. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Columbia Association employees, vendors, government agencies, and the general public. Must have good eye-hand coordination. Able to safely drive motorized vehicles. Must be able to stand for entire shift. Able to lift up to 80 pounds unassisted. (with or without mechanical assistance) Able to visually inspect conditions of vehicles and equipment. (with or without corrective lenses) Ability to follow, accomplish and demonstrate technical and complex instructions & procedures Assists with establishment, monitors and ensures adherence to all shop safety precautions and practices.     Additional responsibilities:   The ERT is knowledgeable, has mastered, and is able to demonstrate, provide training, and supervise the methods required, procedures for and performance of, maintenance and repair of all types of vehicles and equipment with two (2) and four (4) cycle gas engines, diesel engines, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and systems (including brakes), electrical and safety systems. The ERT performs, demonstrates and provides training on all state and federal required inspections and ensures that the Columbia Association complies with local, state, and federal regulations. The ERT develops maintenance procedures and designs and implements reporting to comply with association requirements as directed. The ERT is directly accountable for maintaining and submitting accurate written daily records on self, and each assigned subordinate, for time required, materials used, and description of individual tasks completed on each unit serviced or inspected. The ERT is primarily responsible for maintaining an overall safe orderly work area in the repair shop and surrounding work areas. The ERT’s work, and that of any assigned subordinate will be subject to inspection during and at completion for quality purposes and conformity assurance to industry, local, state, and federal regulations and the Columbia Association standards. The ERT assists the Fleet Manager in the gathering and compiling information for the performance evaluation of peer and any assigned employees. The ERT may be assigned to directly supervise up to four (4) employees. The ERT performs other tasks and/or related duties as assigned or required by management when necessary. The ERT is to wear approved uniform and any necessary job-related safety equipment during assigned shift or anytime while on duty. The ERT will be required to work unscheduled extra hours or overtime with little or no prior notice. The ERT will be subject to primary recall and/or report to, or remain at, work during weather emergencies. The ERT will be subject to both pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screening during tenure of employment.   Minimum Qualifications and Skills:   Ability to properly and safely operate equipment Must be 21 years of age or older Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license, issued by the resident state and must maintain a good driving record. Ability to comply with Columbia Association’s driving requirements. Knowledge, and the ability to demonstrate, the proper usual and customary procedures and tools used to maintain and repair various vehicles and equipment. Demonstrated ability to work independently. Ability to communicate effectively with public, vendors, customers, members, residents and staff members. The ERT is required to possess, or obtain as needed, any hand tools required to perform duties/tasks as directed and/or required by management, including routine maintenance, minor and major repairs, specialized inspections and diagnosis. The ERT must possess knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of small hand-held and wheeled powered equipment, automotive, truck, tractor, marine, trailer, and stationery powered equipment. The ERT must possess good oral and written communication skills. Ability to quickly learn, operate and train in the use of technical test equipment and proper test procedures for individual systems on all associated equipment. Must be skilled in the proper use and care, and perform training of, supplied equipment for related repair work. Conscientious independent judgment concerning work methods and procedures is required.   Physical demands:   Ability to stand for entire shift Ability to bend, stoop, reach, stretch, and climb without any difficulty. Moderate physical effort is required to perform duties.         Ability to effectively work at different heights          Repetitive lifting of up to 80 pounds (with or without mechanical assistance) Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods of time   Work environment:   Must be able to work in all kinds of inside/outside weather conditions (extreme cold/extreme heat, rain, snow, etc.). Ability to work in wet and humid environments.  Exposure to chemicals, fumes, dirt, grease, oils, caustic chemicals, odors, waste and dust.  Position may require working on the ground, or at any location within the state of Maryland Uniformed position - Must wear approved uniform, with steel-toed safety shoes anytime while on duty.   The pay range for this position is $30.00 to $38.00/per hour.   The actual pay rate offered will depend on the overall qualifications of the individual applicant for the position and the amount budgeted for the role.
