The Patient Access Specialist II supports the hospital within the Emergency Room Departmen t by performing pre-service Patient demographic collect and Insurance eligibility of patients. This position will be required to obtain the certification of a Navigator with HCA After the first 90 days of employment, along with first aid and CPR. This position will also keep an up to date knowledge of insurance plans including state Medicaid, employer sponsored plans, Medicare advantage plans and qualified health plans offered via the state exchange. This position will determine benefit coverage levels and connect patient(s) with financial assistance resources as needed. The ED - Patient Access Specialist II interacts in a customer focused and compassionate manner to ensure patient’s needs are met and they understand the hospital and emergency Room policies for the resolution of patient financial responsibilities and various payment options.
This position works closely with the ED providers and nurses to ensure all pre-and-post financial clearance for patients and all procedures performed. This position must meet and perform all the duties of a PAS II position.
- Answer patient financial inquiries in person or via phone.
- Identify patients’ financial needs and align with appropriate resources.
- Communicate with patients regarding their obligations
- Collect copays from patients after triage, and when its required.
- Ensure that accurate information is collected from the patient ( ID, insurance cards).
- Accurately verify all insurance benefits and can explain how co-pays work.
- Explain and review all forms with patient or representative prior to treatment rendered.
- Stay up to date with insurance rules and changes, including managed care and state exchange product.
- Assist patient/guarantor in completion of Medicaid application.
- Must maintain HIPAA compliance with confidential information in accessing only necessary information that pertains to job duties.
- Understand the rules and laws of EMTALA
- Minimum of two years’ work experience with insurance verification, hospital/position office is billing or related areas preferred.
- Must have familiarity with regulations and statutes that may impact conversations with patients or their representatives.
- Use safe judgement, critical thinking skills and have the capacity to use independent logic in decision-making . Ability to make sound decisions and adhere to legal and ethical standards.
- Deliver excellent customer service while caring for customers from various cultures and age groups.
