JOB SUMMARY:
The Division of Education at Columbia College invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Education position beginning August 2025 with a strong teaching focus in the content areas of elementary and early childhood education to include an emphasis on literacy across grade levels. Columbia College is a liberal arts college that is committed to creating a learning community that values diversity and inclusion. We seek candidates who will be innovative in teaching, leadership, and research, while building collaborative relationships in the college and profession.
The Division of Education at Columbia College prepares students to become teachers who are collaborative professionals, knowledgeable in the content and practice of their respective disciplines. The Division of Education offers programs leading to certification in early childhood education, elementary education, special education, and middle-level education. The Division of Education also works in collaboration with other academic programs on campus to offer majors leading to certification in Dance and English Education. Other programs within the Division of Education include an undergraduate program in speech-language pathology, as well as graduate programs in Education Administration and Leadership, Trauma Informed Education, Innovation and Divergent Learning, and Higher Education Administration.
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in curriculum and content area strategies (Math, Literacy, SS); supervising teacher candidates in field experience settings; service at the division, college, and state level; and scholarly activities are expected.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- Applicants should possess an earned Ph. D. or Ed. D in an Education related field from a regionally accredited institution and have a minimum of five years of teaching experience in PreK-6 settings. Preference will be given to applicants with teaching experience in content area strategies to include Emergent Literacy and Mathematics. Interested candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence, a potential to sustain a program of productive scholarship, and a desire to work in a liberal arts environment with an emphasis on leadership development.
- Preference may be given to applicants with prior college teaching experience and familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas.
- Must have some familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
- Ability to meet schedules and timelines.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; excellent interpersonal skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires sedentary work that involves walking, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling some of the time and requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.
