Job Summary:
The Assistant Vice President, Development (AVP) will serve as a lead fundraiser for Columbia College with a concentration on philanthropic support efforts and is responsible for helping to develop and lead the College’s strategy for major gifts, planned giving while effectively managing the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gifts. In addition to direct fundraising, the position provides high-level coaching and mentoring to staff in support of professional development, best practices, and collective performance goals. The AVP, Development is responsible for leading staff prospect management meetings in support of CC fundraising goals. This position works cooperatively with colleagues in Development, Alumni Relations & Annual Giving, and Strategic Communications to deliver ambitious plans for all assigned areas that support Columbia College’s mission, inspire new approaches, and catalyze collaboration. The AVP must have a track record of interacting with senior academic officers/faculty, and executing the complete cycle of major and planned gift cases-from identification to close/stewardship.
The AVP reports directly to the Vice President of Advancement. This role assists the Vice President and the advancement team in creating and maintaining a proactive fundraising team that is motivated and well-situated to meet and exceed annual fundraising metrics, tracked through a prospect management system with data from our CRM, Raisers Edge, NXT. The AVP must be a dynamic and self-motivated leader with a results-oriented approach and a proven strategic fundraising abilities.
Essential Functions
- Perform job duties in accordance with Columbia College’s vision, mission and values.
- Manage a portfolio of up to 150 high-level prospects at various stages in the fundraising process including initial contact, sharing the priorities of Columbia College, making requests for support and stewardships.
- Goal of 20 in-person or online meetings monthly.
- Receive $500,000 in commitments for annual fund, planned gifts and other designated priorities each fiscal year.
- Day-to-day oversight of assigned staff members.
- Lead all prospect management meetings in support of funding priorities.
- Travel regionally and nationally to visit donors assigned in portfolio.
- Soliciting gifts over $10,000 with a concentration on gifts over $25,000 is the focus of fundraising.
- Oversight of assigned staff members; partnering with them to reach annual performance goals.
- Ensure a professional image for the College through interactions and office organization.
- Submit timely and accurate expense reports for approval, and likewise, approve expense reports from your direct reports promptly.
- As an outward-facing professional representative of Columbia College, practice exemplary customer service in all manners of communication – by telephone, written and in person and represent the College in the community professionally.
- Advise others on Development processes, procedures and services.
- Remain flexible with work schedule and communicate with the team regarding travel so that the division is able to maintain exemplary office coverage.
- In consultation with the VP and staff, establish and adhere to annual operating budgets and ensures that development programs are operating in a fiscally prudent and productive way.
- Enter timely and accurate Time Clock Plus entries for yourself, and likewise, approve TCP entries for your direct reports.
- Strive to promptly enter all donor contact information into RE NXT so that our report pulling is up to date.
- Follow College guidelines related to travel.
- Possess knowledge of the policies that guide fundraising at the college, including moves management, fundraising ethics and prospect clearance. This includes a working knowledge of IRS regulations as they relate to charitable gifts and the institutional policies and procedures established for accepting and managing gifts.
- Maintain a collegial, creative and productive work environment within the Advancement Division.
- Partner with the Vice President to set annual goals for activity and results as it relates to College fundraising, both for overall college-wide goals and individual fundraiser goals.
- Work with the Vice President of Advancement to develop the case for support for College priorities.
- Assist Vice President in service to the Board of Trustees Advancement Committee.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality is a must.
- Serve as a member of the Columbia College Management Council.
- Projection of a positive attitude, especially regarding college initiatives, is critical at all times.
- Keeps abreast of current best practices in the Advancement profession and evaluates new and emerging ideas for potential implementation at CC.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Required Level of Education:
Bachelor’s degree required.
Masters degree desired.
Experience:
Five years of direct fundraising, preferably in a higher education setting is preferred.
Previous supervisory experience required.
Other Requirements:
Ability to pass a criminal background check as a condition of employment, and on an annual basis, during employment.
