POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for managing and directing operations at the Grovetown Library. The position assists the County Librarian in assuring efficient and effective delivery of library services to the citizens of Columbia County. This position requires a Masters Degree in Library And Information Science from an accredited college or university.
Work requires sitting at a desk with considerable standing or walking. Must frequently lift light (less than 25 pounds) objects. Employee must use equipment which requires a high degree of dexterity.
Provides direct supervision over three Library Assistants and four Library Aides.
NATURE AND SCOPE
Successful performance in this position assures that the library will be operated efficiently while providing effective services to the public. Poor performance in this position could result in reduction of quality of services provided with corresponding reduction in use o f library facilities.
Guidelines include a Branch Manual which describes the library system, computer software manual, and all relevant County operating procedures and policies. Guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
Work in this position is made complex by the variety of duties and on-going assignments in managing and directing the activities of a branch library.
Contacts are typically with other library employees at all levels, patrons utilizing library facilities, and members of the community interested in or supportive of the library.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Trains, supervises and evaluates branch library staff under review of County Librarian.
- Participates in hiring interviews for Branch staff.
- Develops employee work and leave schedules and assigns work for regular and seasonal projects.
- Makes recommendations to County Librarian regarding matters of policy, changes in services, staffing needs, etc.
- Assists public and staff in use of computers and the internet.
- Provides reference services to library patrons, including location and instruction in use of library resources
- Provides support to County Children’s Librarian in development of the summer reading program.
- Resolves patron complaints.
- Provides information about library services and facilities through library orientations and presentation to schools and community groups.
- Reviews and updates book collection in consultation with County Librarian and County Library book selectors.
- Plans and initiates special programs for the public and presents weekly children’s programs.
- Performs administrative duties such as attending staff meetings, preparing statistical reports and arranging for building and grounds maintenance.
- Compiles and maintains data on items such as fines and volumes checked out for use of County Libraries in preparation of monthly and annual reports.
- Performs circulation duties such as checking out materials, registering new patrons and verifying and charging overdues.
- Prepares bulletin boards and displays as needed.
- Prepares flyers, bookmarks and posters to publicize library programs.
- Balances daily cash fund and maintains income ledgers.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of management and supervision.
- Knowledge of library collections, cataloging systems, books and literature in general, and standard reference sources.
- Knowledge of library-specific software, word processing software, use of personal computer and internet.
- Knowledge of community resources supportive of the library’s mission.
- Knowledge of state and county guidelines relevant to the operation of county libraries.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in providing reference service and library programming activities.
- Skill in dealing with patrons tactfully.
- Skill in working with children.
- Skill in operating a computer, audio-visual equipment, and calculator.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited college or university is required. Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in Library School.
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinated positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with 2 to 4 years experience or service. Possession of or the ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license.
A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
Salary : $1,440 - $60,611
