POSITION SUMMARY

This position reports directly to the Green Programs Manger and is responsible for supervising and directing attendants, part-time or temporary employees and any community service workers at the Recycling Collection Center, opening and closing the Collection Center on the authorized days of operation, acting as a liaison between the Collection Center and the Green Programs Manager, reviewing time cards for accuracy and forwarding them to the Green Programs Manager on assigned days, monitoring recycling container capacities and informing Manager when service is needed, preparing Bills of Laden for haulers and loads recycling trucks when needed, preparing daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly reports and reviewing them for accuracy, answering customer questions and returning phone calls, sorting recyclable materials and ensuring customers do not leave unacceptable non-recyclable items, physically assisting customers with unloading recyclable materials and sorting items as necessary, directing and instructing customers on various recycling services and policies, separating and sorting recycling items, utilizing cash register, taking payments for required fees, operating baler and forklift, controlling traffic flow into and out of facility, preparing records and logs of facility activity, monies received and vendor activity and reviewing them for accuracy, maintains a clean, orderly, organized, and safe public recycling facility, ensuring the area surrounding recycling containers is clean and removing any debris from the site, traveling to job sites, other city facilities, etc. as required to assist team members when needed, utilizing appropriate safety equipment and procedures and wearing safety equipment and eyewear (glasses, hardhat and safety vests) when applicable, identifying and reporting problems at the Collection Center to the Manager and performing repairs as instructed, maintaining a reliable attendance record and performing related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Prior supervisory experience a plus.
  • Provide excellent customer service with a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Keep written logs, measure and determine volumes of materials and containers.
  • Follow oral and written instructions, communicate effectively verbally, deal effectively and courteously with Manger, employees, associates and the general public.
  • Effectively embrace differences among employees and citizens.

  • Perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of others.
  • Able to lift 30 pounds and push/pull 100 pounds with pallet jack or cart.
  • Knowledge and experience with tools, equipment and machinery applicable to this position.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to recognize and identify recyclables and dispose of items properly.
  • Ability to maintain written reports and receipt book and labeling equipment.
  • Ability to adapt to change in work schedules if needed.
  • Self-motivated, dependable and able to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through written and oral communication.
  • Ability to self-start and handle complex details.
  • Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents and practices and to use resourcefulness and tact in meeting new situations and problems.
  • Ability to communicate with the general public, industry and government officials in a positive, cooperative and professional manner and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
  • Ability to work primarily outdoors with exposure to dust and pollen; subject to a variety of extreme weather conditions; may be exposed to noise, fumes, and odors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or equivalent is required. Prior supervisory, forklift, compactor, recycling or collection experience and knowledge of basic safety precautions desired. Must possess a valid Driver’s License.

A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
